Hey, just wondering about a 4runner.
I'm thinking about getting a 1992 4runner 4door. It's got a 22re in it.
Just wondering about how much power it's gonna have.
Will I be able to throw some 31's on it and still have a bit of power? or are they gonna drag it down too much?

You should be ok with 31's you can get away with a little lift and 33's but any more and you need gears.

31's are fine. I had 35's with a stock motor and 4.11's and it would do freeway speeds okay.

The 22re will not give you a lot of power to begin with and it also depends on what type of transmission you have. The 31's should be o.k. with either type, but better with the manual. I wouldn't choose a bigger tire size than that without re-gearing first.

Power is a funny thing. I've seen 300HP Ford Trucks die trying to pull 20K pounds and a 150HP semi pull the 300HP Ford out of its predicament.

The 22RE is going to have about 110 HP before it hits the ground. What the transmission, differentials and tire size does with it after that is up in the air. But to make 100 HP do the equivelent work as 300 HP its not going to happen... it can get it done but not as quickly, which is part of the definition of horsepower. You have the ability to do some amount of work (torque) but horsepower is a variable.

Definitely gonna throw some 31's on it. It's got a 5spd manual tranny in it, so It should be good. Thinking about upgrading the exhaust at some point too, so that should ad a little.

i've actually been thinking lately about 32's.... it is a manual... so will that be ok for running around? will it go highway speed ok? thanks

you can easily swap in better diff gears from different year/optioned trucks and 4runners.

I run factory 4.88 gears to match my 33"s

well first of all your foinding a good runner not much new 4runners like that have a 22re. second of all a 22re doesnt have alot of power i mean hey its a four cylinder. but those things are so hard to kill i mean realy really hard to kill check youtube for vids of 22res/22rr/20r. or search the site about them they are the most reliable engine ever. the 3.0(slow) gets abou 14mpg which i cna get better with a v8 not lying and it has absoloutly no power plus is less reliable and has a few common problems. i would regear to 4:88 though. sorry i didnt proof read this response so correct me if you really feel like it

cool! thanks for the responses. I'll definitely look into regearing to 4.88's. Um.. where do i find that. do i have to buy new gears to get that or is there any that come stock with 4.88's that i can find at a wrecker or somthing? thanks
