Possible swap from auto hubs to manual?
I have a 94 4runner. It's making a bearing type noise mostly in the right front. I've changed pretty much everything in the front end that could have caused it( ball joints, wheel bearings, cv's and new axles. Not sure what else it could be. It has auto locking hubs( don't know if original owner swapped from manuals). The noise goes away when in 4 wheel drive. Any ideas? Should I try switching to manual hubs? I've thrown a bunch of time and money at it and I'm pretty frustrated. Any help would be appreciated

your '94 did not come with auto locking hubs, it came with ADD flanges, which locks the cv axle to the hub, so it spins constantly as the wheel moves. If it has new bearings, are you sure you packed the correctly? Maybe you got a bad "new" bearing. Are you sure that the proper procedure was followed when setting the new wheel bearings?
This will walk you thru setting up (or checking) your front wheel bearings. http://www.off-road.com/trucks-4x4/t...ent-18322.html

Thanks for the reply, I haven't checked to see that the bearings were done correctly. But the noise goes away when I put it in 4 wheel drive, which made me think its not the wheel bearings

I would jack up the front end, and spin the tires, see if I could make the sound happen, and try and pin point it that way. Is it a loud squeal noise? Maybe you have an abnormally worn brake pads, or a rubbing brake shim. When you say it doesn't make any noise in 4wd, is that in 4hi, and 4lo....or just 1 or the othr?

It has new brakes as well. It kinda sounds like the front axle is flopping around or a noise very similar to a wheel bearing. It didn't make the noise in 4hi or 4 low. I also changed the front diff fluid and didn't notice anything obvious. Also checked the transfer case fluid and it looked fine. Is there any reason to suspect a bearing in the front diff or should I change the hubs out to the manuals?
