The Possible Routes to Going Single-Key

I would like to restore and modernize my 4Runner.
One thing that comes to mind in doing so are my car keys.
As you guys know we have 2 keys: one for ignition and one for doors.
I want to hear your ideas on going single-key.
How can I change the ignition keyhole to accept the doors key?

Also, I bought my truck with a keyless entry remote. It's a crappy after market keyless entry remote and has since fallen apart and died.
Is it possible to buy a keyless entry remote for a newer Toyota, say the Rav 4 2-button remote and program it to my keyless entry system?
How does my keyless entry system work anyways?

My 93 has a single key as well. Your truck probably had something replaced at some time. A locksmith should be able to re key to the original key for you. As for keyless entry I would just get an alarm installed with that option.

Red face

My 92 has one key that works all the lock cylinders.

is your ignition the odd one and the door key fits every thing else??

Much easier to pull the ignition lock cylinder and have that keyed to fit your door key.

Your locks were replaced at some point. When I bought my truck the driver side door lock had a screw driver punched thru it. I replaced both door locks and ignition after I bought it. So I have two keys now.

One key for my 1991 4Runner. Any reputable locksmith should be able to rekey your ignition to your door key

It's really simple if you keys aren't to vastly different shapes, say "S" vs "Z" like a GM you're probably only supposd to have one. Toyota keys are a single key system.

the fun one was the remote door lock solenoids I found out about when a stray radio signal (I live close to an airport) triggered them and I couldn't get into my truck...
-another one was the 3 splices in 4 feet of wire...

and no I wasn't the one with a condom shift boot...I don't even wanna find out more about that one
