I recently bought a 94 2wd with 22re and the motor was freshened up with pistons and rings, bearings and seals. When i drove it home a coolant bypass hose by the oil filter came off and i didn't know it till i got home and it was empty on coolant and the engine was steaming, so i fixed that and the truck runs great but its really hard to start after its warm but i see no coolant in oil and no coolant loss but when i start it there is some white smoke not alot and it goes away after its warm but the exhaust has a strong smell. Im going to do a compression check and a pressure test on the coolant system. does this sound like head gasket?

It doesn't really smell like gasoline but I'm not sure what coolant out exhaust would smell like but I know its hard to stand at the back of the truck with it running. Sorry for the lack of explanation.

i was unable to get a pressure tester today, is there any other way i can check the head gasket?

I ran the engine with the radiator cap off and within 30 sec coolant was starting to overflow and when I raced the engine up the coolant would suck back down and when I let off it would come right back up. What does that mean, I really need help on this.
