Pop sound when going into reverse

'94 4runner 4wd SR5 5spd.

Problem description:
Speed 0mph, clutch in, engage 1st gear, let out clutch. Truck moves a few inches and sometimes a pop sound is hear in the first few inches of movement, no pop sounds after. Accelerating in 1st, if you release the gas completely and let the engine slow you down, then press the clutch pedal in, shift to neutral, and come to a complete stop. Go back to 1st, start accelerating, again you hear the pop sound. Come to a complete stop. Accelerate in 1st, press in the clutch BEFORE releasing the gas pedal. Come to a complete stop and go to reverse gear. Start accelerating in reverse - first few inches of movement and again the pop sound is heard/felt.

Does anyone recognize these symptoms? Any idea what it might be? U-joints all seem to be fine, third member was recently done along with a bunch of other work but none of it seemed to remedy the problem. No other unusual noises or performance characteristics at this time.

Any input would be helpful.

bring your truck to Toyshop on Geary blvd. They love 4runners there. They should be able to help you figure it out!

I figured out the problem. A while back I replaced the companion flange seal coming out of the transfer case to the rear drive shaft. When I reinstalled the flange, I torqued down the large bolt to the spec listed in the FSM and staked it. After checking the flange today I found that it had too much play, as if the nut had come loose.. however, the nut was properly staked and was in the place where I had left it. I tightened down the nut some more to get rid of all the play and now the noise is gone.
