Poor Ride Quality.... New Bilsteins 5100s and my ride quality still sucks

I bought an old rough 1992 pickup a couple years that was primarily used for wheeling by the previous owner (awful shape at that time) and have been working on it as a hobby but ended up being my daily driver unfortunately.

So I went through the front end and lift and fixed a bunch of stuff. From uncranking the torsion bars (now flat) to new TREs, control arm bushings, idler, ball joints, etc. and New Bilstein 5100s. The steering is much better but still rides like ˟˟˟˟. Especially in the front.

I am really trying to get a decent ride out of it as its my only vehicle and refuse to sell it and get a commuter car. Just dont want to be beat to death in it every day.

What can I do?
Thanks guys

Red face

Just what are you comparing the ride quality with??

It is a Truck they do tend to not have a ride like a Lexus 4 door !!

Did you get the correct shocks for your truck.

Thanks for the reply but what do you mean by correct shocks for the truck.... i installed the standard 5100 bilsteins for the applicable lift. Its not a travel issue. Checked. Maybe a stiff valving issue for such de-cranked torsion bars? I feel that I am getting a slow rebound in suspension travel.

Never owned a Lexus...maybe one day. But this is toy number 5 for me and I am stumped. I have a feeling OME T-bars are in my future as that is all i can rationalize is between me a a decent ride. Im guessing mine are sprung out.

I run those shocks, my torsion bars aren't cranked and my truck rides..like a truck. You can try different shocks I guess, the 5100's are pretty stiff. What do you mean by how it rides..too soft, too hard? I replaced the torsion bars in my 90 gmc and it made it stiffer, which is what I wanted, if you are going for a softer ride, ome torsion bars won't do it.

Flat suspension = ride quality sucks.
You're probably bouncing off the bump stops alot.
If you don't believe me, put a little dab of grease on the bumpstop. Drive around for a bit.
And check to see if you have grease on the control arm where the bumpstop hits.
Crank the front up a bit, it'll be stick but it won't bottom out.

Check the tire pressure.
Running big tires at high pressure makes it ride poorly.
30-35 PSI will soften things up a bit.
But the main thing would be the suspension.

Bilstein 5100 and thier HD shocks ride stiff, you want monroes or similar if you want softer. Since its lifted its gonna be tough to find shocks that are softer. Could try the rancho adjustables.

Toyota trucks do not ride nice, they ride rough compared to a chevy or ford 1/2 ton. If anything they ride similar to a 3/4 ton with how stiff they are.

What kind of ride did you expect with offroad performance shocks?

You could always add some weight to the bed to smooth it out.

Before I spent 300 bucks on a set of shocks....I would want to research exactley what I was getting into.

Just looking at the picture, I can tell your rear springs are flat and the front suspension is swagged out.
You're riding on the bumpstops, all of them.
Changing shocks will not help this issue. It'll just wear the shocks out quicker.
Replace or repair your springs, they are what hold your truck up on the suspension, not the shocks.
The shocks stop the truck from bouncing around like a bowl of jello on every bump. They do no help support the weight.

If you want an improved ride quality, get a set of 63" chevy leafs. Check out on pirate4x4 how to install them. Great upgrade for these trucks and costs very little.
Crank the front to match the rear once the 63" chevys are installed. Or get some Old Man Emu torsion bars. But I'm sure the old ones will work for ya.

Ya the front bars may be toast as well. Check and see if they are twisted at all. People will often torque the bars then when the truck sags again they will re index them and twist them worse. just something to look at. Get some coilovers
