Have had some problems in the past months with my 22re. Had a tune up.. Plugs, wires, cap, rotor and got my injectors cleaned. All that fixed me last misfiring. Now another problem.

Usually when I first shift into 1st, 2nd and 3rd engine will misfire and bog down alot. Acceleration has slowed down alot as well. It's been gradually getting worse. Before the bogging and crappy acceleration I had a good size mpg drop. About 50 miles less on the tank.

I kind of feel as if it's an exhaust problem. When warming up there tends to be whiter smoke out the tail pipe. When reving the engine it's a bit noisy in the exhaust system and sounds like exhaust builds up inside and then shoots it out. I also have a minor crack in my muffler which let's out a good amount of exhaust. Would exhaust leaving the muffler possibly cause false readings on an O2 sensor? It Aldo sounded as if a few times it backfired as well.

I was planning on getting an lc header, cat and muffler anyways so if that's the problem it wouldn't bother me too much.

Anything else that could be causing bogging, bad mpg and slow acceleration?
I can post a video of my exhaust and if anyone thinks they could tell by the sound of it if anythings wrong.

White smoke always makes me think oil/coolant mixing. That's no fun.

It's whitish until it warms up then goes away. I've had this problem for the past week and just changed my oil yesterday and it's still golden with no signs of coolant. I think it may just be water moisture burning off in the muffler, so maybe not smoke or possibly?

Yeah, hopefully it's exhaust related. Mine would puff out white smoke intermittently (sometimes it would be fine for days at a time) and the oil was clean as could be for about 4 weeks before it finally started mixing big time. I had broken timing chain guides, a blown head gasket and three cracks in the head. It's a wonder it ran as well as it did!

Even with all that (and sparing no expense on new parts) I came in under a grand doing it myself.

Haha wow. Hopefully I don't have a head gasket blow in the near future. Can anyone vouch for me if a cracked muffler could be causing O2 misreadings to run lean and drop mpg? I plan on checking my cat tomorrow to see if it may be clogged. What should I be looking for? If I can't see through it to the other side I'm assuming its pretty clogged or what?

White smoke from exhaust that disappears = condensation. No worries.

The O2 is before the muffler. So, no.... a crack in it won't cause O2 misreadings. However, a substantial exhaust manifold or post manifold gasket leak could. Fix any of those if you have'em.

Try running some more searches. Not to discourage you from asking questions, but there's a number of reasons you might be having this problem. Many of them have been discussed. Once you've read the troubleshooting guide, use some of the possible trouble components as your search keywords. Moreover, reading what others have been through would give you a number of ideas and things to look for.

I hate to say this, but be careful about some of the diagnostic advice you read around here. Some of it's not so smart. Don't hesitate to ask about it.
