Pompatus's 1994 4runner project

Hey all,

I am the proud new owner of a 1994 3.0 4wd 5spd 4runner with 283,000 miles. There are a few issues with it that I will be addressing right away, and others that I can do as time and bankroll permits. My intent is to use her as my daily driver, as well as build her up for moderate wheeling. I have a little experience working with cars, but most of this will be new to me.

Before I purchased my new project, I took it to a Toyota dealership and had them do a full inspection. They uncovered enough to keep me busy for a little while, as I will be doing most of the work myself. I have access to a full garage, so tools well not be an issue. However, while I may be a newb in respect to automotive mechanics, I am no stranger to forums. I know where to find the search function, and I know how to use it. I also bought a Chilton's manual that will come in handy.

The purpose of this project, and for that matter this thread, I'd for me to learn about automotive tech in general, have an awesome product to show for it, and dutifully feed you kind folks here at Yotatech lots and lots of pictures along the way.

Now that the courtesies are out of the way, let's get down to business.

List of known issues:
1) CV boot torn to crap.
2) Valve cover gasket leaking.
3) Butt sag.
4) Front shocks leaking.
5) Rusty brake calipers.
6) General surface rust on body. She spent most of her life in Utah, so she's definitely seen weather.
7) Rear window does not function properly. The motor works, and the right side goes up and down, but the left side literally needs a helping hand to function at all.
8) Key does not rotate smoothly when inserted into ignition cylinder.

Well I have to start somewhere, so why not from the top? I have decided to just replace both front CV axles instead of just the boots. I might do the shocks while I'm in there, we'll see.

Thank you for reading, and I will gladly accept donations of 2¢ should anyone feel generous. More to come!

The Haynes manual is much more user friendly than the Chilton, fwiw

Your runner is very clean. Would love for my truck to be that clean again someday!
