Well tonigth, my clutch pedal got REAL soft....and the truck is darn near impossible to shift into gear. Slave cylinder! BUT Ive been having an oil leak that i cant track down...possibly the slave cylinder leaking. Where is the fill for the master/slave cylinder? I wanna check the fluids before i go buy a slave clyinder

The 'fill' should be a round black rubber cap to the left of your brake booster. The pedal can go soft IF it got low, or if the master is bad. Your slave cylinder is down on the right side of the engine, bolted to the bellhousing.

Easy way to do a leak check is to wipe it all down, trhen see where the leak develops. put cardboard down to see exactly where the drips land.

usely when you lose a slave the pedal goes to the floor

so I just checked....that little "fill" is about 1/3 of the way full. Is this enough fluid for it to opperate correctly, meaning that the slave went all togteher...or is this way to low

My master went at the piston that plunges in through the firewall and it leaked alot into the carpet before I realized what was going on, so thats another good place to check. Also the first 2 rebuilts I put in failed in 3-4 months so good luck and keep an eye on it after your repair.

Ditto on the rebuilds- spend the $$ and get a real Toyota replacement from MC or whatnot. I put 205K on one of my 2WD Toy's before it needed to be replaced (the master, that is).

i jsut replaced my master and slave cylinder about a week ago or so, didnt take more than 3 hours for both. bleeding took about an hour to get it right, didnt want to get firm

well is there a way to fox a leaky slave cylinder? Or do I have to replace it all together?

Slave cylinders are cheap, man. Rebuilding can cost just as much and not be as reliable as a new one. And rebuilding is the only way to "fix" your bad one. I know....you said you're not doing the master cylinder, but have you checked it like what Blknblu said? It wouldn't hurt. Then you can rule it out altogether. If it is just the slave, get a new one. Everyone says Toyota, but there are good aftermarkets w/ lifetime warranties.

Also, is the clutch fluid dark like coffee?

the the fluid is real dark. I thought brake fluid was lighter in color?

your slave is probably okay.... I would check the seals around your master.
Your slave is down on the side of your transmission housing. Check up under the clutch pedal inside the cabin, look at the carpet, and the floor underneath, is there any brake fluid in there?
That would indicate a leaking master, but if it makes you feel better, shotgun them both, I replaced the Master on my '84 here a few months and i picked it up at O'reilly Auto Parts, lifetime warranty, and no issues. only cost me like $35. I didnt do the slave, mine was fine.

it gets dark when its old, it wouldnt hurt to bleed all the old fluid out.

well...i came across anotrher problem. I filled the resivoir up with brake fluid..started the truck to see if it fixed anything. BUT I see something dripping real bad. I look under the truck...SOMEONE stole my transmission fill plug!!!!!! the big bolt. i didnt check to ee how low it was...so i gotta go get a new fill plug, AND fiugre out this slave cyclinder crap.
