PO switched to synth....crap or ?
The truck that I will be purchasing has been switched from trad. oil to synthetic, and while I have heard some bad things about synthetic, they don't seem too big. From what I understand (from this forum, my former jeep forum, and personal research), synthetic oils "can", and I repeat "can" lead to oil leaks. This appears to be primarily because the detergents in the synth. oil essentially clean out any of the gunk in the seals that help to keep the oil in. The oil leaks that seem to develop are not very large, but they are noticeable. Since the brand new 22re that is in the truck was started out with synth. when it was installed (18k ago), I am not too worried about this.
I didn't not let this oil-switch affect my buying decision, but I am curious if are there any tips (that I havene't read yet) for a person running synth. on a 22re? I figure, regular oil level checks and changes are to be assumed, so anything else?
Thanks in advance, and when I finally get this thing, I'll post pics

There is no reason why the engine should leak because of synthetic oil. The additive package is not that much different from dino oil. The oil is the same viscosity at temperature either way.
Penzoil Platinium Plus 10-30 at Walmart, or Castrol 0-30 made in Germany (look at the back of the bottle for where it is made) would be my recommendations.

penzoil? *shudder*
friends don't let friends run penzoil.
mobil 1 is the best stuff off the shelf. amsoil is better, but typically needs to be custom ordered.
if you want to extended change intervals i'd recommend doing more frequent filter changes.
do a search, theres a ton of oil threads on here full of bad info about the voodoo magic of synthetic oil
oh, and be prepared for a ton of stupid responses to this thread...k, you guys can post 'em now

I'm running Castrol Syntec in my truck.
I recently replaced the head (perfomance upgrade) and I did not have any leaks at 230,000 miles
I think synthetic provides an extra measure of durability that will make the engine last longer, but if you run conventional oil and chage it when you are supposed to you should not have any problems.

Thats all I run (10w30 dino)
The synthetic oil change over will only cause problems in higher milage engines. You have nothing to worry about.
I would keep changing it every 3000miles or so. I don't trust old after that long

yes, there are leaks when you switch to synthetic over dino. read the threads on it.
sure dino juice and synthetic are the same, but synthetic will clean up the seals, thus causing the gunk that was there holding on to be lost.
just... read some threads...

You do order Amsoil but it is not "cutom ordered" you just get what you need.
Here is a good article if i can get it to work

that will answer all your question and explains alot, and prove alot of folks on here know nothing about oil they think they do

I switch from black, dirty dino oil (in truck when bought) to Mobile 1 higher milage 10W30 synthetic. I haven't leaked a drop. There is NO oil on the any of the edges of the gaskets (oil pan, rocker cover, timing cover, front seal or rear seal. I think my engine is fairly tight, but it still has 270 000km (170 000mi).
