Question Pipe Help and Terminology

Hey all. starting to look at an exhaust system for my baby! i just have some questions about what kind of pipes i need and how much.

heres the plan so far.
The rig is an 87 22r reg cab pickup

LCE Header
2.25 pipes
magnaflow 14" round Muffler
Magnaflow High flow cat

so i guess im just wondering about the types of pipe available online.
what type of steel should i get?
thickness?
do i need to do any custom bending or can i get pre bent stuff online?

thanks for the great assistance i know you will give

Parker

sounds like an awesome set up. I'd like to sugest putting a flex joint on the down pipe. Don't know if I'd trust prebent pipe if you intend to wheel it as you'll want it tucked in tight. I had portion of mine down in Texas at a shop that only one guy spoke english great work for cheap but that don't help you. I went to Bucky's in Lakewood for the flex joint and befrore I knew it I was really screwed by his pricing. He had already had his man weld it into my down pipe so I couldn't just say keep it. I took the down pipe off the truck and did all the measurements myself. So beware Bucky's will get you over a barrel. Can't help much more.

There'd be no point in ordering that stuff online except for the headers. You can buy all kinds of exhaust pipe at a lot of stores so why pay shipping and wait for it. Also, a muffler shop will do the bends for you, usually doesn't cost too much either.

so the down pipe is the collection pipe of the header (where the 4 tubes join to 1) where i would then add pipe correct? and i want to have the flex joint to prevent damage to the system from flex right?

thanks for helping a poor young noob

ya a local muffler shop quoted me for 225 bucks for pipes and install. i would rather not pay that much and do it with my friend and his welder. but ya i forgot about just buying the pipes at a muffler shop.

are there any strange bends i will need or can i just send a single pipe straight back from the flex joint?

that kit is intended for installing an "X" pipe in a V6 or V8 engine'd vehicle.

That sounds high. I had a converter, el-cheapo turbo muffler and 2.25" pipe installed in our '91 for ~250. This was a couple years ago though....
The flex pipe would go between the header / collector and the catalytic converter. Then you could go straight to the muffler. You'd need something to go over the rear axle and turn out the side if you want it 'stock' looking. You may be able to use a 45 to go up, then a 90 over the axle to turn back down, then 45 back to horizontal and 45 or 90 out behind the tire, or straight out the back.

You can do a good portion yourself. I put header-down pipe-cat (direct fit flange put on should have ordered cat that way but didn't know I needed it that way at time, check your header)- pipe (like 12-18")- muffle (I'm running glasspack). Glasspack bent over axle to exit rear behind driver side tire paid to have bent 2.25" pipe. I got the rubber donut hangers and reused some of the stock hanger peices and bought some new ones too. You may be able to use your stock system as a template to have part of it bent for you. Just make sure everything will mate like you want. This is like the flex joint I got screwed over http://cgi.ebay.com/ebaymotors/2-SS-...spagenameZWD1V but of course you'll most likely want a larger diameter, price around.

If you wheel you may not want it coming straight out the back, it could make alot of ground contact on steep entry and exit angles.

IIRC, it's a Smittybilt. Came with the truck when I bought it. Beastly looking thing, eh?
