Ping Ping Ping

So my 1989 4runner 4x4 22re started pinging quite abit when i get anywhere near 3000rpm.. its been burning oil for quite a while (and hasnt seemed to start burning anymore then usual) but a few weeks ago it started pinging quite a bit.. at first i thought it was the exhaust but after a bit of exhaust work the ping is still around... I checked the timing and it is fine so any ideas on what could cause this?? is it just increased oil consumption?? any ideas would be swell.

my last 22re leaked oil past the valve guide seals and fouled the plugs.
that truck always needed super unleaded or it would ping
check your plugs
if so it may be top end time

my 22re has been pinging since been pinging since been pinging

new plugs, new cap and rotor, tried air box adjustments, tried everything i could think of

i have a quick question for you...can you hear yours ping when the windows are down? i cant seem to hear it over the radio or any wind noise, and it leads me to believe that probably a lot of these trucks ping, but i don't think most people are as eager as me to listen closely to their engine. i mean, i need the radio off and all windows up or i would never hear it. it makes me wonder how many 22res have the same problem as mine. i think most people would inevitably hear it at some point, but i do know some people who never take a drive without the radio blasting or all windows down or both

Mine's the same way. It really pings at the beginning of every shift, also at highway speeds. Mainly when it's warmer outside. It'll barely ping in the mornings on my way to work. I've tried the timing thing... retarding it helps a little, but it still pings like crazy. I can only hear it when the windows are up and the radio is off.

My 94 22re pinged since it was new. I can get it to stop by retarding the timing a couple of degrees.

Isn't there a way to richen the mixture on the 22R-E? I know that on the 22R there's an idle mixture screw, but then again its carbed so there are several adjusments that can be made to it. Mine has never pinged though, but then again maybe that's because it's getting more than twice the fuel that it should be. Damn carbs. . . . . .

I have the same problem, usually above 2500 rpm in 4th and 5th gear, especially under load (hills). I just put on 31's and that dosent help, more strain then the 225/75's I had. I just replaced my NGK platinum plugs last night, installed NGK standard copper cores now, that did help a lot but the pinging isnt gone yet. Everyone check your EGR to make sure its working and all passages and EGR are clean.

I'm ashamed to say I don't know how to do that properly. Is it just a matter of taking it off and having a look inside?

Yeah, just remove the EGR, you can shoot it out with Carb spray or Throttle Body cleaner. If you have a hand held vac pump you can check to see if it holds vacuum and if the diaphram works. Also clean out the passages on the head and manifold where it bolts up too. You might have ot replace the gaskets too when you put it back on.
