Pics of a 4runner I am looking to pick up
Quote from the owner....
"I have a 1994 4 Runner SR 5 that has some engine issues that I was planning on parting out, but would prefer to sell the whole thing. The engine has 158,000 miles. It starts, but has a tapping noise. I have had one person say it could be a rod, another say it is a bad lifter. Otherwise the vehicle is complete and in fair shape. It has a few small dents and rust starting in a few places. I would say it has had some beach and trail driving by it's cosmetic appearance.
I have owned it about 7 months and never had it on the road. I was going to fix it up, but I found another 94 with a 5 speed that I bought that was already running with a current inspection.
Burgundy exterior, gray cloth interior. V6, 4x4, AT, PW, PL, AC, alloy wheels."
MY NOTES::
in the cargo area one of the rear panels has a 3"x3" broken piece of plastic, the carpet is a bit dirty, and the driver seat has a 6" rip in it.
So we went and looked at it and it sounds to me like it has a valve train problem - I would think if it was bottom end, I wouldn't be able to feel the tapping when i put my hand on the passenger side valve cover. It is leaking water from the rear side of the passenger side head.
So I was thinking of doing a HG + top end + possible a valve/head job...
He is asking for 1300 obo and I was thinking that i would offer 800 for it...
Whadya think?

I think that's a pretty sweet ride! I think that 1300 is a very reasonable offer, though he'd prolly come down a bit. 158k really isn't all that many miles. Let us know how it turns out!

Kind of depends on what your goal is with it. Plan on having to put a new engine in it. You never know what's really wrong until you get into it. I picked one of these up for about 500 with a bad engine a couple of years ago. It had a few more miles on it and the rear fenders were just starting to rust. Otherwise condition looks similar. I personally won't be touching another Toyota truck 3.0. It's not worth the effort IMO. If you're just looking to flip the car, or otherwise don't really need it, I'd lowball him/her and just wait for a smoking deal before jumping on it.
