Smile pickup 22r ignition

Ok so i have decided on my 88 pickup with 22r to go with a MSD ignition box. And do away with any ecm control. So i am removing them and starting from scratch this was a 22re now converted to a 22r for many electronic issuses. I will be using a stock vacume advanced toyota distributor. And a MSD Blaster2 coil and a MSD ---- box. So what MSD box does anyone recomend and do i need a tach adaptor if i will no longer have a ecm. But will be using factory tach. Any ideals Oh and if anyone knows where i can pick up some used parts for a second engine i am going to build i am ineed of a 88 22r intake and carb.

Smile back to ignition

so i am looking at the msd 6a (6200) analog box.
a blaster 2 (8202) coil.
msd 8.5 wires (31949).
All of this will go on my 87 pickup 22r. So what spark plugs to get and gap, what timing, and do i need a tach adapter for stock tach.
This is a weekend only on streets truck.
the engine is stock rebuilt for ENGBLDR with the RV cam.
the carb is a Red Line Weber 38 outlaw.
the fuel pump is stock mechanical.
and the trans is 5 spd 2x4.
i am fixing it up for cruize-ins/ car shows in my town.
Does that sound like a good combo to you, comments and suggestions welcome thanks

Hey there.... did you ever get that figured out?
I have almost the same thing going on.... too many electrical issues to list, On my 1988 single cab, I'm getting a weber 32/36 kit from redline... recently rebuilt 22re with engnbldr kit and rv cam.....
Looking for the best option for ignition as points and condensers should be a thing of the past....
and would like to just use a stock dizzy with a msd ignition setup.... I used to have them on my veedubs and never had any problems with them so I want to recapture the magic =)
thanks!

P.S.> Anyone interested in my old efi gear?
I live in Tucson AZ

Ok so it works great with a stock dizzy. You can use MSD 6A igntion module with a Blaster2 coil. You will also need a tach adaptor if using the stock tach. If using a after market tach then no adaptor needed. You will not need to use the ballast resistor if you use the blaster coil. It is easy to hook up and alot better throttle responce. If you need any help with wiring let me know.

I have an 88 22re
is that going to be a special distributor or can I just slap any of them in there?
anybody know if there's a difference between years that much?
when you look on ebay it pretty much seems like they are "compatible"from 85-95 but I don't know if I believe that.... any experience with this?

Are you going to keep it as a RE or convert to a R. With the 22RE just use the dizzy that camre with it. On a 22R it uses a dual hookup vacume advance you will need. Any 22R from 85 to 95 should be good.

Both 22R and 22RE use a stock dizzy with an after market ignition box.

thanks,
SO....
Here's what I've acquired both in parts and knowledge about converting my freshly rebuilt 22re headache into a trail worthy machine:

Weber 32/36 kit coming in the mail
Stock Vacuum advance dizzy
Stock Intake Manifold

Next I suppose I have to do something about the fuel tank situation...
People keep saying I have to extend the pick-up in the tank if I remove the 22RE pump....
Do you know about this?

I have also read that I can just put an inline electric pump (carter p4070?) after the tank and that the pump will passively let the gas flow through....that would be optimal because I've heard that the fuel level sending unit is often attached to the fuel pump....
is there a pick-up/sending unit combo that just drops in from the 22r trucks?

Another person told me that it's as easy as removing the old pump and extending the pick-up with a little bit of GM power steering fluid hose as it doesn't break down with exposure to chemicals like gas and alcohol

A third option I gather is that a more permanent fix would be to just braze a small piece of pipe and cut an angled end on it so you can get it down to the 1/4 level (I think I'd like to put some sort of mesh too lol)
what did you have to do?
