Yep...
assuming that both are short bed trucks, or that both are long bed trucks. There aren't a lot of 3rd gen long beds out there anyway, so you should be all set.

Nope. I have a reg. cab '88 and an Xtra cab '94, and they have the exact mounting points, etc. They are not only interchangeable between reg. cab and Xtra cab, but also between 2nd and 3rd gen.

All the standard short boxes are interchangeable except for the quad cabs which have a short short box and the 84-88 extra cab long box 2WD and anything else the latter was a very rare model though it was featured in the '87 Car and Driver buyers guide as the model photo for the trucks. It ran on an extra long chassis that allowed for the fitment of the long box. You can however use it as a source for a long box - long box swap with no issues. [Other than the usual 2wd/4wd fender flare style issues that is]
