Permanently locking the ADD unit

is this a good idea or not i have a soild axle swap in progress but my ADD is not working that is why im wanting to try this and i am wanting to know what yall think is it good,bad,ok,or stupid i would like to hear yalls opions

I'll be doing the same to mine since I don't have add on my 4 runner.
I am putting in a 1994 differential with 4.56's out of a 4 runner I parted into mine.
Either that or just swapping the axle tube with a non add shaft but this seems a little easier.
It's just locked all the time and if you have manual hubs no big deal.

i was using this site http://www.off-road.com/trucks4x4/ar....jsp?id=399612 are they both doing the same thing one is telling me i need to take out half of teh front axle and the other is engaing the ADD and capping off the other vacuum tubes

Basically you just take the add part off (The part with the fork that slides back and forth) slide it to the passengers side(locked position) then put a hose clamp around the shaft to keep it from sliding back to the disenguaged position.

You slide the other part on the axle shaft to the locked position

cap the end of the nipple(optional to keep crap out of the diaphram)
put it back together

done deal and pretty easy.

is it going to be different driving it and will i need any special tools to do that?

Ok you will need.

1. Basic metric hand tools
2. Gear oil to fill it back up.
3. You should have manual hubs on your truck if you do this.
It will not drive any different with manual hubs.
4. If you never done it before well depends on your mechanical ability doing this is easy if your mechanical.
If not it will take a good while. It should be less than an hour.
It may take longer to pull all the add lines and hose etc out of your vehicle.

Your gas mileage will suffer a bit, but no it won't damage anything. If it weren't just temporary, I'd get manual hubs.

Hmmmm...... Now I'm wondering if I can pick up an ADD front end in 4.56's and swap that in, mod it like ya'll are talking about, and have an inexpensive front locking diff. It has got to be cheaper than dropping in another Aussie.

Is an ADD front end any good as a locking diff?

What? No, read up on ADD is shift on the fly, basically the D-side axle disconnects from the diff so the DS doesn't have to spin in 2wd. You could lock the diff and hack the ADD to engage/ disnegage the D-side wheel like a wannabe front locker.

Yeah, you'll have problems if you leave it locked in all the time like that. You're going to have way more wear and tear than necessary. Check with WabFab for some Aisin manual hubs or even look at buying some Warns. Takes about 45 minutes to swap them on and you'll minimize unnecessary wear and tear.

They're made from kryptonite and are indestructible. I sometimes carry one when I know I need 4wd to get home (I go alone).

Oh. I just thought that since I already have manual hubs it'd be an easy swap in for a front locking diff. Perhaps just saving money for the Aussie would be best since I know how to install one of those.

You can get the long side shaft from a non ADD truck and it will bolt in place of your ADD unit with no mods necessary. Should be cheap from a junkyard, or try Dirtoyboys parts ad in the classifieds section.

matt, i too keep my old add flanges in the rear boxes in my runner "just in case"... ill prolly never break a hub, but its nice knowing that if i did something catastrophically wrong in my rebuild, ive got em...

and yes, theyre painted the same pretty blue...
