passenger side noise after turning engine off, 2nd gen
after I turn my engine off, there is a noise in the passenger side dash, behind the glovebox/near the vents, sounds like a motor wheezing to a halt, it sometimes goes for as long as 10-15 seconds. Any idea what this might be/solutions?

That's what my power antenna does. Have you considered that?

noise after engine turns off in 2nd gen
those 3 questions are excellent. YES- could be the power antenna,
I DO sometimes run the A/C (but this happens even when I am not using the A/C), and IS coming from the same area as the charcoal canister. How can I pinpoint which one it is? The power antenna is all the way down (I do not have it up, as the motor has gone out on it)...it no longer moves. I recharged the A/C myself...but have not replaced the compressor. I DID have my wife start and stop the vehicle...with my head in the engine bay...I did not see any parts moving in the bay to create this sound...seemed to be coming from INSIDE the console...but canister..could be...or antenna...these are great suggestions! I would love to get rid of this noise. after turning engine off it does not sound very healthy! does canister make noise? why, and how to verify/fix this? antenna...any way to fix or turn off this function a/c how to quiet down compressor/verify? (A/c works great) thanks a lot

well if your hearing it after you haven't used the a/c than thast not it ,sometimes the freon makes a hissing noise after you shut the engine down if your useing a/c ,not applicable if it wasn't on though, could be the canister venting ,try looseing the gas cap ,and the shut it down and see how that does.

Sometimes vents & directors inside the air duct system are vacuum-actuated and they can cause this sounds as the vacuum releases...my $.02 worth.

it's the antenna!
It's the antenna! Got the problem wheezing motor sound to turn on when I turned on the radio...and switched from CD-Tuner...it is definitely the sound of the antenna motor trying to raise and lower the antenna. Seeing as my antenna is stuck in the down position, it's straining, hence the noise.
I hardly use the radio, mostly use cds and may even go with XM radio in the future....is there any way to disable the antenna motor, remove a fuse, or coupling etc? thanks! getting to the bottom of this! T

If you are so inclined, you can cut and cap the wire from the back of the stereo. I think there are two wires, but you should probably consult the FSM just for safety.

disabling power antenna in 2nd gen
is there another way to disable the power antenna in a 2nd gen rather than taking the stereo out and cutting the cable? I would really prefer a fuse removal or different fix than taking out the stereo
or- maybe if I just fixed the power antenna that would be a better option. I will search for 2nd gen antenna fix parts/threads now!

Yeah... This is an old thread, but just to close it off properly, here's how to disable your power antenna motor:
1. Take the plastic trim piece off the inside of the passenger side wheel well (actually, just take enough screws off so that you can pull out the rear end of the trim piece to see behind it.) 2. Look up behind the trim piece to see the power antenna and motor. There are two wires going from the assembly... the antenna wire that goes to the radio, and the power wire. Disconnect the connector for the power wire (just going by memory, the connector is probably 7 or 8 inches away from the motor. 3. Re-install the plastic trim piece. Done! No more whiny motor noise! EDIT: For some pics, check out Bob's writeup here.
