part interchanability

i just picked up an 79 Toyota motor home for parts 20r 4sp some parts i need for my truck are

1. alternator
2. window lift/crank
3. windshield

at least these are the parts i don't know if they will work or not.

the 3 wire connector on the alt is different but i figured it wouldn't be hard to make an adapter so i don't have to alter my stock wiring. but the wire colors are different on the harnesses so if someone knows whats what on each vehicles wiring that would help.

79 alternator has an external regulator. I believe they went internal in 83/84.
It's not a straight across alternator swap, you'd have to include the wiring to the regulator. It's not impossible, but it's not just plug-and-play.

which direction are you swapping? 79 parts onto newer truck?

79 parts into an 89 truck, i noticed the alt wire going to a black box on the firewall but i assumed it was a bat isolator seems how its a motorhome

the alt has 1 large wire and a connector with 3 prongs just like the 89 but the plug connectors have a different shape. seems how a new alt is damn near $100 and i have a good one sitting in this motor home that im parting out

On the 79, you should have a large white wire coming off the alt 7 to the batt.
The three plug wires should be white/green, white/blue, and white/black. These three wires should run between the alternator and the external regulator. Also, the white / black wire connects to chassis ground.
The regulator should have a red wire, a white wire and a white/yellow wire. The red wire is turned hot with the key, the white wire is connected to the battery, and the white/yellow wire connects to the charge light.

On the 89, on the alternator you should have the large white wire from the alternator going to the battery.
The three wire plug should be a white wire, a red wire and a yellow wire. The white wire connects to the battery, the red wire goes hot with the ignition switch and the yellow wire connects to the charge light.

When you look at the 79 alt/reg together as one unit, they strongly resemble the 89, with the only difference being the white/yellow wire on the 79 and the yellow on the 89. They both appear to perform the same function though.

You may be able to migrate the 79 alt/reg to the 89 but you will have some rewiring to do.

Why don't you just get a used Alternator, perhaps one from Nix99? They are not $100. The '79 will not work in your truck without major rewiring, so you have to ask yourself: Is it worth the added time and expense of trying to make the 79 alt work? Because once you cut and splice your truck for the new alternator, it will be a PITA to go back.

The other parts you listed are different as well. Chances are, you have a glue in windshield on your 89. Aside from being a completely different shape, its a press in not a glue in.

The window crank is different too. It will not line up to the holes in the door, and will not bolt to the window glass either. Besides all that, why would you want to put junk from a 79 in your 89?!

hope it was cheap...about zero compatibility..

I have had windshields install in my '81 Trekker, '89 Tercel and my '05 Camry..never paid more than $170

i got the 79 motohome for free becouse the motorhome part of it is all rotted out but its got a good strong running motor in it so im just ripping everything thats good off of it pulling the motor and trans and everything else that i think that i or someone else might want and then im getting rid of the motorhome. i figured if i could replace some small odds and ends on my truck it would be worth it. i also figure i could rewire without cutting my factory harness by removing the plug from my bad alt and sodering wires from the 79 harness to that connector and then shrink wrap
