t-cases

If I was going to guess I would say they are different as far as swapping them. The auto t-cases (A340H) share oil with the trans and are just their own animal. I just picked one up for spare trans parts. Also I think the 4wd controls are electric. The later ones have a forward shift chain drive case. I haven't seen or heard of a gear drive behind an auto from the factory.

I think it'll depend on the transmission. My '87 22RTE 4runner had an A340H transmission, and the tcase was integrated into the trans, and very different than the RF1A tcase that was in my '86 parts 4runner.

Here's a good page with some info on transmissions and tcases (although not 100% correct, as my A340H was an '87 22RTE without ADD...)

They are differant. The automatic has a transfer case that is chain driven and is part of the transmission, it shares fluid with the transmission and the transmission park pawl is located inside the transfer case. The transfer case is like a mini automatic transmission with clutches, etc. The manual transfer case is gear driven and a seperate stand alone unit, you can also install lowre gears, twin stick, dual cases, etc. The only way you can swap transfer cases is to install a gear driven manual transfer case behind the auto with this adapter. http://www.inchwormgear.com/store/pr...products_id=86

I have a lot more information in my 86 Turbo 4Runner build thread, the link is below in my build thread.

ALL A.T's ALL ADD's And ALL V6's have a chain drive.

ALL R/E 4 & 5 speeds EXCEPT for the ADD trucks have gear driven TC's.

There are TWO AT's. The A340f and A340H. The H is a POS.

Thanks for all the help guys!

Now is there a cable/wire diagram I could use? Trying to figure out what this cable near the oil pan is.

Thanks!
