Oregon DEQ Testing

I am planning on getting my wife's 93 runner tested soon. I know they don't charge you if you don't pass but... Does anybody know if you fail the test they require you to use a certified shop to do the repairs or if you can do them personally?

I live in the Portland metro area so they only do the curbside idle test and I'm sure they will prolly do a visual test for emissions equipment. The only thing i think they might have a problem with is the EGR pipe that goes to the manifold has been welded as it had a leak. (it came this way when we first bought it) Hopefully they don't care as there is no reason to replace it :-/ just for looks.

Well, might depend on which DEQ station you go to. I went to the one out in Hillsboro, just off hwy 26, and the guy saw the hole in my hood from the 3.4 swap. He just asked "What'd you put in there?" To which I told him "2000 Tacoma V6." He just looked at my vin and said "Well your vehicle was equipped with a Toyota V6 from the factory." Never looked under the hood, just used his mirror to check for a cat, looked for a check engine light, and stuck his sniffer up my tailpipe.

As far as the repairs, well they allowed me to smog it with an entire engine swap, and I don't recall ever having to produce paperwork when we'd emissions tune our Jeep Wagoneer that had problems passing if we left it tuned for best performance.

I dont think you will have to show paper work. I also went to the one off 26 in hillsboro with my buddys 82 K5, it failed and he just said it was running too high on the hyrdo carbons and said "go fix it and try'er again"

This past summer I took my 4runner in to the same DEQ and they just looked for a check engine light and put the sniffer up the exhaust for a min or so with the engine at idle. Passed just fine.

Do they turn the engine off and back on to look at the check engine light? Either the bulb or the wiring broke on hers so it never turns on.

They didn't on mine. If it's not running great, like you think it just might not make it, make sure it's good and warmed up when you get there. Wouldn't have helped me too much when I went, there was about a 15 min wait in line so the cat probably had time to cool down a bit before I got to the testing station.

take your truck to Autozone or somewhere first to see if you are pulling any codes...that way if your Check Engine Light is on and you don't know it since the bulb is out you will have a heads up.

the big thing about Oregon DEQ is to make sure that you have power to the diagnostics (OBD) plug. They keep the engine running. If it is an Auto you put the truck in park and they will run it up to how ever many RPM's they need and tell your whether you pass for fail and will give you the print out with the hydrocarbons etc.

If it is a stick you will stay in the truck and run it to XXXXrpm's for them. they have only done the visual check for a Cat/complete exhaust at the hillsoboro one of hwy 26. 15 years ago on my 84 I was missing parts of the air cleaner intake and failed for that, that was done at the DEQ in clackamas..

weird thing is that my '81 has had better readings the last time I went through. I will run a couple of tanks for supreme before I take it through.

Is Autozone really able to pull codes on an OBD1 system? I thought the diagnostics they sold for OBD1 Toyotas was just a jumper wire in a plastic housing.

That's what i thought too Jonny. From what i knew only Toyota has the very model specific tester to check an OBD-I system.
