I bought this truck a few weeks back, and in general I am trying to get it roadworthy. Currently it has 35 inch tires on it that are a little over 34 inches tall. The gearing is way too high for these tires though. I am considering two things: 1) try to find someone to re-gear the truck for me or 2) go to a much smaller tire (like 31's). The gearing right now is a little over 4:1, and I can barely use 3rd gear. 4th and 5th are a waste of space. Tires seem like the obvious answer (and is fine with me), I just worry that it is going to look stupid with tiny tires on there. What do you guys think?

Regear or downside tires. But doubt you bought an SAS'd truck to look like a roller skate.

Use caution with using local shops to setup Toyota gears. There different than Dana, spicer, ford,.... Of course they'll tell you they setup 100,000 difs a day. But most Toyota dif failures are setup issues. A costly lesson to learn.

Yeah, that is the plan, one thing to think about is that I could probably buy tires and springs with less arch more cheaply than I could re-gear. Plus those are things I know how to do!

I haven't found anyone that does gears period, so I may just be out of luck.

The easiest method while keeping the 35s would be buying good used 3rds with 5.29s and swapping them in. Gears should be set right.

You could also have your 3rds set up new and shipped to you, like from gearinstalls.com

The cheapest route is to downsize. Confirm your gear ratio first of course, but it you are still at standard 4.10 then 31s is the way to go. But then you want to look at removing what lift you can to bring center of gravity down. Are there any body lift blocks at all? Are there blocks above the spring perches? Are the shackles longer than stock? If no you'll need to swap leafs. But you can most likely recover money selling the monsters you have in there.

Nice truck. If you have the loot, go with gearinstalls.com and 5.29s for 35s.

Unfortunately the lift is all spring. There are no blocks or big shackles. I know 31's are the right size, but I wonder if I could get noticeable improvement with 33's and maybe not have to install new springs?

Correction: There is a one inch block in the rear, and six inch shackles in the front. So I could drop it one inch without too much effort.

personally id bite the bullet and get new diffs that are geared and locked, solely because your rig is already SASd and headed in that direction. we all know you wont be happy running 31s with that ride height and SAS. either buy used or get new diffs from TG, Marlin, justdifferentials or any number of toyota offroad retailers. yes this is an expensive hobby and you gotta pay to play.

Not busting you out. But if you didn't know how to verify gear ratio or know what you were feeling on test drive. Prolly not a good idea to mess with changing suspension components. You may cause other problems.

I've always read 5.29 for 35's but I just mounted 35s with 4.88s. I'm happy with it but have engine mods... Opens up possible options with sourcing difs.
