Ive got a 94 pickup. Its got a reman 3.0 with about 7k on it. The oil smelled like gas so i changed it and now a week later it smells again. Ive done some research and it could be a few things. Anyone have this problem before? What should i try first? Ive never done much other than change my own oil and dont have the time or money to take to the shop so any help would be great. Thanks.

Do you run short trips where the engine does'nt get a chance to warm up well??

Do you have the correct thermostat installed?

How does the truck start and run overall??

My trips are normally 10-15 mins long.
A shop did the reman engine so i assume the right thermostat is installed.
And the truck starts aand runs great.

I guess ill do the compression test tommorow. What will the test tell me about why there is gas in the oil? That Seal is bad?

An injector slightly sticking open will cause excess fuel. But then it still has to work its way past the rings.

Your trips may not be long enough to warm the engine to where it will 'cook off' a bit of excess fuel.
If your truck is running well, and your fuel mileage is decent, you may not have a problem that can be fixed, other than driving longer trips, so that oil temps get high enough to purge some fuel that has found its way into the crankcase.

Do you live where its cold? That would worsen your symptoms.

Different engine, similar "problem". 89 22RE. I get the gas smelling oil in the cooler temps, especially when I run back n forth to work (10 min) each way and short around town trips. Runs fine, good compression, injectors are ok, not awesome. I chalk it up to running richer when cold, and never getting the oil hot enough long enough to evaporate any suspended fuel. After a long trip, (120 mi), and shutdown, smells like regular oil. Not saying that you shouldn't investigate, but it may not be a real problem.

I live in upper washington and for the last little bit the temps have mostly been in the freezing range
