oil pump removal
hey fellas, I'm going go change the oil pump on my 90 4Runner 22re and I was wondering if the bolts had to be torqued or do I just tightened as tight as I can with a ratchet?

DO NOT tighten the bolts as tight as you can get them. It is bad policy in general, and in this case the bolts go into an aluminium timing chain cover. Your chance of stripping the threads is about 100%. I think the torque is about 12 foot pounds. That is not much, just snug if you do not have a torque wrench.

400ft-lbs impact wrench for 10 second should do it. But check the FSM at the top of the 86-95 forum page. This might have it as well http://www.4crawler.com/4x4/CheapTri...ingChain.shtml.
PS you are threading the bolts into aluminium which strips easy as it feel like about 1/4 as hard as iron when drilling into it. I wish my gf stripped as easy as aluminium.

Hey matt, I hope your girl doesn't read that.....lol. Supreme, always, ALWAYS torque everything. A good couple of torque wrenches will save you lots of money in the long run, and saves your nieghbors from hearing just how much of a sailor you can sound like when you break or strip a bolt......

Stuff I torque like bearing caps, head bolts, anything going into aluminium, timing cover, exhaust manifold bolts, but most other stuff, I go by feel and use thread locker. I'm usually pretty close.
