Oil Pressure Low after sender swap

First, I have an 88 4runner DLX 22RE 2.4l

Ok, I have been up and down the searches for the right oil pressure sender for the SR5 cluster swap. I'm still a bit confused.

My problem. After replacing the old oil pressure switch with a new oil pressure sender (Beck Arnsley #2011130 - which was listed for SR5), I get low oil pressure. It's hovering just above the bottom line.

I installed this before making the swap (I was waiting for LED bulbs) and it tripped the old cluster idiot light for oil pressure - which I thought was odd. After swapping the cluster out (all works great - except my water temp just died after a strong signal yesterday - but that's another thread, I guess).

I'm thinking I need another oil pressure sender?

If so, which one? I see in some threads the listings for Yakima and Nippon Denso. I don't see NipponDenso in any online parts catalogue - I'm suspecting its now called SANKEI?

Anyway, if anyone can help me out with the right part that I need I would be most grateful. Looking at low pressure on my dash makes me ill.

[If anyone out there have any ideas why my water temp gauge went out I'm all ears.]

By the way, swap was a breeze, otherwise, and the led lights from SuperBright Lights (194 and 74 led's are the bomb - sorry no before and after pics).

Thanks!!!

Red face

You are using brand new out of the box sending units??

With either sending unit did you use any sort of thread sealant ??

As this sometimes does not allow the sending unit to ground like it should.

Also a loose or corroded connection can cause poor signals.

It is possible you got a bad sending unit new in the box.

Then as seems to happen all to often wrong item in correct box.

Yes, Brand new. I also used some pipe thread on it. But I've read on here that thread sealant shouldn't matter as the threads should cut through that to make contact.

I'll be pulling it out today and giving it a once over (clean the contacts, inspect thread, etc.).

Thanks for comments.

Don't worry what the stock oil pressure gauge says. It's not accurate by any means. Just use it to know that there is SOME pressure, not as a gauge of "enough" or "too little". After mine's warm, it drops to zero. 3 2nd gens, and they are all the same.

Ok, cleaned it up and made sure my contacts are good. Seems to be working, but still low when idling. I guess that's normal?! Never had an oil pressure gauge, so I guess that's part of the problem. Somehow got the water temp gauge to work. Thanks for the comments.

Iirc, You only need 4 lbs pressure at idle, so if you are getting a reading at operating temperature idle, I'd say you are ok.

Just another confirmation, So long as it moves from it's "off" position to at or above the L it's probably ok. And you don't need any sealant or wrap it's a tapered thread.

Probably the crappy Beck Arnley part, get a Toyota sender and I'll bet it works right.

My description of it's function is for a "toyota" part.

If you want to you could use the extra oil pressure port, located behind the engine mount, to connect an analog pressure guage temporarily. This would allow you to get a reference of the pressure in PSI to compare against where the simple toyota guage is reading.

I'm not sure who would do it but it could be tested and numbered if it was calibrated against a well known source.

There are also tests in the FSM, resistence check on the guage and flash count of the sender, did you do either or both of these.
