Oil Cooler)

So I just replaced my radiator with an aftermarket Spectra CU50, fit was good, everything good EXCEPT it came with an oil cooler. At first this was a pain in the ass because I couldn't get the fittings passed the power steering hard lines (91 V6 4x4). After moving those lines to get the radiator in place everything worked out well.

I was just going to leave the fittings capped up since the 3vze already has an external oil cooler (just a dome for oil to circulate around in). Now I'm thinking of actually using the cooler built into the radiator and was wondering if anyone else has done the same especially since I have a leak around my cooler. I've used hayden filter relocators for this purpose in other car but I'm thinking I'm prob going to need to fix the leak around the cooler and tap the line coming out of it and reroute to the ext cooler. Anyone?

not to knock you or doubt you but are you sure it's an oil cooler and not the transmission cooler?

If you are a 5-speed those stay untouched. AUTO and you would have had to hook into them.

are you sure you want to cool your engine oil? does your truck over heat? Seems that you want the oil warm to keep the engine at a good operating temperature.

yeah, that'sthe EXACT same one I put on our 88, no oil cooler, just a trans cooler. and yes it was a PITA to get it past the power steering lines and it sits there w/o having those transmiission lines attaced (or even on...i unscrewed them)

Old versus NEW....transmission hook-ups on bottom

Now ,whether or not you could run engine oil through that, I have no clue and can't really see HOW you would do it either.

Those fittings are for an auto trans, not for the engine oil. Do not run engine oil through there, you already have a cooler on the block that performs that function, as you stated above. I would be very cautious about running external, high pressure engine oil lines to the radiator. Those fittings are not meant for high pressure and I have doubts that the heat exchanger in the radiator is rated for high oil pressure. If you blow either, you can toast the motor and bearings in a very short period of time.

If you want, cut the fittings off of the radiator, you do not need them.

'I would not run engine oil through it, the oil pressure can spike much higher than ATF pressure and it may not be able to handle the pressure. If it breaks your coolant and engine oil will mix. Plus 3/8" lines are smaller than I'd want for an oil cooler. I do like having an extra oil cooler though, I've seen my oil temps pretty high.

Ahhh you guys are correct, it probably is an ATF cooler. Forgot about the pressure differences so I won't be using it.

And as far as wanting to cool my oil, of course I do, it's an AZ truck and the cooler I can run my oil the better.

First get an oil temp gauge and see what its running at, then you can size the cooler to that, if you need one.
