Odometer not working

I just bought my first 4Runner. Its a 1993 2WD V6 automatic. It was pretty rough when I bought, however, I have cleaned it up and it is looking great!! There is one problem with the truck however: The odometer is not working and was not working when I bought it. It shows 117428 miles on it, the 2nd owner believes it is somewhere around 132000. I am bidding on a new cluster on eBay, but wonder if this is the issue. The speedometer works but the odometer does not. I have been reading about cable driven speedometers/odometers etc and have tried to trace the cable down to my tranny. I must not know what I am looking for because I can't find it. Anyways, what should I look at first, before replacing the entire cluster? I did win a used speedometer/odometer on ebay, but I am afraid to tackle the installation without some further trouble shooting. I am new to Yotatech and would appreciate any information!! Thanks
