Question Odd whirring... tranny failure

Ok so this morning was the first time I've used 4wheel in probably 2 months. Just cruisin on a muddy farm trail to do a little hunting, nothin fancy. When I kicked into 4 wheel it shifted fine but had a high pitched squeal almost like there was no lubrication. I was only going about a half mile in and out so i didnt think it would hurt. Once the hunt was over and I left the farm, put it back in 2 wheel and got about 50 yards down the road Rpms revved HIGH and it was like i was in nuetral!! I put it park and cut the truck off, let it sit for 2 or 3 minutes and it cranked up fine and took off down the road about 1/4 mile then again RPMs revved up to about 3500 and it wasnt spinning the tires at all..... any thoughts?? 92 auto 4runner....

the wonders of the automatic transmission. . . . . . check atf, check transfer case oil, last time atf fluid and filter change?

does it slip in all gears? if so im guessing bad torque converter or insufficient oil in converter. or t-case is blown. remember the t-case (no mater 2 or 4wd) is the last thing in your drivetrain that can fail without drive-shaft movement. possible check by trying 4lo? (different gear in t-case)

does it slip in one gear? if so then insufficient atf pressure, low fluid level, (these could be under "all gears" too) or the band/servo/clutch that is supposed to be "holding" that gear is toast

I had this same problem. Put the transfer in low and see if issue goes away, if it does change ur filter and fluid, you'll need to drain both the tranny and transfercase. Put it all back together and add some Lucas transmission fix it comes in a quart size bottle and is thick, real thick. Worked for me more than 2000 miles ago, should work for you and a lot cheaper than a rebuild

Fluid levels look fine. nothin looks or smells burnt. filter hasnt been changed in a while though.... I drove around the hood today, no more than 1.5 miles, acted fine til I put it in 4wheel. then after about 30yds it kicked out and continued to do so til I got home, in drive, reverse, 2hi, 4hi, 4lo, anything... When i got back to the house burnt-smelling smoke was coming from under the power steering pump.. (3.0 btw)....
