Noise Question - Detailed Description

Guys,

I recently have a new noise in my '86 4runner (5spd 4WD, 22RE, 150K, stock). She's got 150K on her and runs great (I drive around 100 miles a day). Here is the new noise:

What it sounds like:

Honestly it sounds like a exhaust thwacking/loud ticking (although I'm almost positive that is not the problem) Basically its the normal tick of a 22RE but just amplified (not that it is the engine...just that's what it sounds like)

When it occurs:

In gear, with the clutch out, and the gas pedal depressed. The more gas given, the faster the light thwacking.

It does NOT occur when:

I am stopped in neutral, revving the engine or otherwise.
I am moving in neutral at any speed.
I am moving in neutral at any speed and I revv the engine.

It sounds like it is coming from right under my feet, or possibly under my seat. I thought that it was the exhaust pipe, a connection or clamp, etc. But the more I thought about it (ie not occurring when revving the engine) the less of a chance I gave this idea. I am thinking maybe a mount (engine or tranny) is loose and causing something to hit because it is shifting under load....any ideas?

I had an exhaust leak that was audible in the cab only when in gear. The manifold cracked on the back side. Try having someone rev it while you've got your head in there, and you can try to pinpoint it. Mine was audible when you were near it in neutral, just not really audible in the cab in neutral

check your drive shafts... u joints clicking? CV's?

and looooong shot, but there is an old prank where you put a zip tie around the driveshaft so that when it spins the zip tie clicks against the body....

just to check...

Is it engine ping? Check your timing. Make sure your RPM's are below 900 at idle and that they drop when you short the TE1 connection.

hello,

i had a thwacking sound behind my instrument console... it was the speedo cable.

the faster i would go the worst it got.

but, because you are moving, your speedo would still display the current speed but you say the noise isn't there when moving and in neutral...

so, i dunnom

good luck.

Does it really just happen when the motor is stressed in gear? (like going up hill or accelerating?) Sounds like you may need a valve adjustment... dunno
