Noise in gears 1-3

Ok so i need a quick answer to a question. I'm looking at buying another Toyota. The guy says there is a problem with either the clutch or transmission. I need help figuring out which one it is. The truck is a 1986 4x4 with 155,000 miles. Its got the 5 sp and the 22re. Stock everything. The truck makes a whining noise coming from that "area" in gears 1 2 and 3. It stays in gear but makes that whiny noise. My initial thought would just be the clutch. Any suggestions? Asap.
Cheers

If that tranny is whining. its probably gonna go soon.
Reverse is usually the first to whine then 1st 2nd so on.

But My tranny has been whining in reverse since i bought it and 1st and 2nd are starting to so im just waiting for it to blow.

Hows many miles are on it?

Ok so its not a whining like he originally said. Its a clicking that accelerates as the rpms go up. It has 155000 miles and its got the 22r. No sound is made in reverse. This is stumping me and I don't want to be replacing a tranny.

Yes it goes away in 4 5 and reverse. For some reason this doesnt seem like a tranny or clutch problem. It sounds like it could be an exhaust leak. This whole thing sounds goofy to me now but it still could be a real problem. If you need any more info on the problem just let me know. Any help is encouraged and appreciated!

What does the clicking noise sound like?
If its an exhaust leak it probably wouldn't stop in 4th or 5th.
