Noise in 3rd and 5th gears
hi,
I've been noticing this whine/grindish type noise coming from my transmission.
It is loudest in 5th gear, but it is present in 3rd gear. There is no noise in 1st, 2nd, 4th, or reverse.
The noise goes away when I take load off the transmission(let off the gas).
I was thinking syncros, from reading around about it, but I really have no idea.
I just changed the gear lube to a synthetic, it didn't change anything. There were verrrry small bits of steel on the magnetic drain plug, I dont think its much to worry about.
The problem is similar to this thread https://www.yotatech.com/forums/f116...noises-109139/, but there is no definative answer.
Anyone have a place where to start?
If you've experienced this what did you do? How much is involved if it is the syncros.
If it is a real PITA to fix this problem, then screw it. Its just annoying.

Have you try changing the fluid yet? Go with MT-90 Redline, if you can't get them I can, just PM me.
edit: Mine will sometime grind at 3rd gear (its been diong better now after the fluid change), but if I rev it high enough it will shift fine into 3rd gear and my brushing is still fine, might be the syncros, but hope its not.

how hard is it to replace the syncros?
I have access to a full machine shop, my dads a machinest.
I know a few mechanics that could help me out.
Is a tranny rebuild something I should try to do?

my trans made a whine in 5th at first then started making it in every gear but 4th. the trans in 4th gear is a direct power flow. in every other gear is uses the secondary shaft and bearings. its just time to replace the tranny or rebuilt it at that time.

I've had the front main(input shaft)bearing go on 2 trannys and my buddy had one go on his. You don't hear the noise as much in the lower gears at first due to the lower speeds.
I made my 3rd tranny from the parts from #1 and #2. Front and rear bearings were the same so I used both the rears which were fine. My buddy had his rebuilt at a shop. I got the old parts back and one of the mains was bad too.

More than likely the support bearings inside the trans are failing like dc said very common on 4cyl trannies and on a w56 most heard in 5th regardless of what speed you are going. No don't try to do this yourself 5th gear requires a special puller to get off the mainshaft many rookies break teeth off on their first try. Only rear fix is to find a shop you feel comfortable with and who will stand behind the repair rebuild your trans
