No Power Steering

No Power Steering
I might be getting a 94 4 runner shipped out to hawaii for my time there. There is no power steering in the car. What would make this go out? This is a truck that my friend owns in california. He said that it worked when turning it one way but not the other. Now there is no power either way. When it stopped working one way there was enough fluid in the system. I'm really hoping the rack isn't out cause it would mean i need to find a new ride. What could be causing this problem?

To me it sounds like all it needs is a new PS pump as well.
It cannot be your rack because you don't have one. 4runners before 1996 have a recirculting ball-type steering system.
Good luck.

I am not an expert on power steering, but I would guess that it is the power steering box, not the pump, since one direction went out before the other. The pump is going to create pressure regardless of the direction that the wheel is turned. Maybe the system just has air in it and needs to be bled?

I'm with the other guys that said pump. Had this issue on a car I had a while back. Let it sit for a number of months and when I went to drive it no power steering. Changed pump and all was well.
