sorry lol it has the 22r in it and a 5sp tranny and what it is the guy i bought it from said he changed the valves and it was running bad he said the compression being to high or something not really sure though he is only 20 and not the sharpest crayon in the box lol but he said his mechanic told him to back them off just a bit and not torque them all the way which sound retarded to me lol but i really dont know alot about this engine i just know they are a great design and i am trying to find out if what he did is causeing the issues or if he was right to back them out a bit before i tear into the engine

yeah i checked the plugs and it is running rich and i found out just now he didnt have a fuel filter lol and the alternator is bad on it and it has 33" tires on it now
and the sputting issue clears up after driveing it a while so i guess it had some trash in the fuel but i'm going to fix all that tomorrow and see if it work wish me luck lol

Okay, we still dont know what he meant by "changing the valves" Soooooo...
Lets assume he meant he had the valve lash adjusted. Improperly set valve lash can cause the engine to not run correctly.
I know this is for a '95 22re, but setting the valve lash is the same for both 22rs and 22res: http://www.ncttora.com/fsm/1990-1995...e/ma/maint.pdf

Take a look at the AFM (airflow meter bolted to the airbox). There should be a square black plastic plate on it. Does it look all smeared with silicone or RTV, like the yahoo took it apart to try to "adjust" it?
The other likely culprit for running rich is the "cold start injector" leaking.
You said it clears up after running awhile - do you mean once the engine is warmed up it runs better?
