Newly Rebuilt 22re Wont start - - Help

Been reading this site for years, decided its time to sign up. Anyway, my problem. I just fully rebuilt my 22re with 30 over pistons, got everything back in, all went fairly smoothly and now I can't get the SOB to start. I am getting spark and fuel and every once in a while I get a back fire. Ive rebuilt plenty of Chevys, but never a Toyota so I am completely stumped. I have checked the timing three times now (push the dizzy in at 12 o clock so it rotates to 11 oclock at TDC). Anybody have any ideas on what I should check? Or are these as touchy as high compression race motors for the first time and do I just have to mess with timing until I hit a sweet spot? Any suggestion would be helpful.

Thanks

Get another set of eyes to look at it.

Vacuum lines, AFM, hooked all your wires back up, GROUNDS, fuses, did you put gas in it?

Good luck.

Everything is hooked up correctly I am pretty sure, but I will get someone else to check it out, maybe take some pictures of everything tomorrow and post them on here. I also put a brand new head on it, should I have left the valve lash a little loose for start up?

yep typical stuff- vacuum lines, intake duct, tps and afm are plugged in,
cam is indexed to crank correctly, valves are adjusted, plug wires on distributor in correct order/position.
have you tried starting off starting fluid?

And when I loosen a banjo bolt on the cold start injector fuel sprays out, so I assume thats an indication of good fuel pressure.

yeah, lift the afm off the air filter and give it a puff of starting fluid, and if it stumbles and runs for a second or two, you have a fuel delivery problem. that one helped me figure out i had a bad fuel pump.

Yep, we tried that first, didn't fire so we checked the pump and it was fine. Turned out it had just been sitting a while and needed some priming by the pump. Then we found out about the back of the engine ground not being connected...not sure why it mattered but once it got connected everything worked much better...strange things these engines are.

Alright, just went and checked... How many grounds are there... I have the main ground from the battery to the block, the one from the back of the head to the firewall, and the 3 brown wires from the intake wiring. Am I missing any?

Should be one from the battery to the fender well but I assume this is the battery to the block one.

Like I said, get another set of eyes on it...be surprised what they will find when they are not locked in to overlooking the obvious.

Good luck with it!
