newb question

I have a chance to pick up a FREE 88 4runner, motor is blown. I can pick a motor (3 liter) up here in Colorado for 700$. I would like to build a crawler and take my time doing it. Does this sound like a good price for the motor? If not any suggestions? Can I expect any other suprises? thanks in advance

If it's free pick it up and then take your time looking for the right motor. If it's a used 3.0 I'd be weary of the head gaskets being blown.

Yeah, $700 is low, but if it's junk it's junk. That may explain the price. Then again, it may be fine. Just find out all you can about it before you buy. If there's too many grey areas or not enough verifiable info about it, keep looking...since you're taking your time. I've been taken by so called upright individuals with one motor already myself. Paid twice what I wanted to for a rebuilt 3.0 because I had to rebuild it again. Still came out less than putting in a 3.4, though. Didn't have that much.
