Hey guys... i know this is a common question and task but i have yet to find my problem after searching and searching. I have a 91 4wd with a 22re. I changed the timing chain and after putting it back together i have had nothing but problems getting it to run. I finally got it running. It will go up and down the road but is starving for power. It also will not rev up past half pedal or so. I have timed it with the crossed over terminals many times and preloaded the cam gear. Just needing some help for my daily gas saver. I have tried many things. I am fairly mechanically inclined. This import has be stummped! YOu guys seem to be the experts though. Thanks for your time guys.

make sure your distributer is back in the right place,sounds like it could be one tooth off. check and re-check!!!!

^ Agree. This sounds like a timing issue.

I have pulled the distributer and moved it a tooth back and forward multiple times.. this is the only tooth that it will run on. It will rev up in the garage just fine but once you put it under a load it wont. On the road it will run really good for the first 1/4 throttle then after that it will just like bogg down and not make any power.

it is set on 5 degrees also.. Could i not have pre loaded that cam and chain enough? The chain on the drivers side is fairly tight.

ahhh come on guyss.. i know someone has to have some ideas. I checked all my timing again. IF it is set on 5 degrees than it has to be on the correct tooth right?

After you put the timing chain on, Did you rotate the crank a couple of times to check the timing marks on the crank and cam to make sure it was not off a tooth? If the chain is off. No matter how much you play with the distributor it will never be right.

No i didn't. i set up the shiny links with the dots on eac h sprocket. but when preloading the.cam the shiny link is just left of center.

and you were CERTAIN you were at TDC when you put the chain on right?

I was thining dizzy off a tooth too but if the chian is wrong, that's a different headache.

The piston was at the top of the cylinder and the two front valves were closed.

that sounds like TDC to me.

I'm stumped, I'm afraid. I did this last year and had issues when first starting up and it turned out to be a tooth off on the dizzy.

I will check the dizzy again. but if it is on 5° then it is on the correct tooth right? i have moved it i bet 10+ times but i will def try again.

hmmmm.. when i did this i was instructed to pre-load the cam. This put the shiny link just off to the left of the "dot". But yours is directly over it. I preloaded it to tighten the slack on the drivers side. I only went one tooth and it tightened it enough to where it was "fairly" tight. Is there any slack in your chain when the shiny link is above the dot on the cam gear and below the dot on the crank gear?

There is a hole in the top of the cam that a punch can fit into. I used a punch to rotate the cam clockwise to skip a tooth on the chain... which essentially tightened the slack on the drivers side.. therefore the extra chain went to the passengers side which the slack was taken care of with the tensioner.

I used that hole/punch method too (real PITA to get it on there!), but I believe I'd lined up the dot with the bright link and didn't have that slack you mention.

I think you may have accidentially advanced one tooth too far on the cam sprocket when you put it back on the camshaft?

Im for certain I only went one tooth. Not going to be able to work on it tonight. Its only 15 degrees here today. Hopefully tomorrow I get to mess with it. Def a lot of help man. The link you sent me is the directions i used when doing the process. Can the dizzy be a tooth off and still reach 5 degrees? I couldnt get it to run advanced or retarded a tooth from where it is now. It will go up and down the road but just no power at all past 1/4-1/2 throttle. Just boggs down.
