new TG rear 3rd wont fit!!! is it tight?

so I was just dropping my new arb TG third in the rear and it wont fit on the sides where the air plumbing wraps around. TG is closed right now so I cant call, but Im wondering if they fit tight...should I hammer on it? its a v6 on a 94, the inspection tag on the unit says v6 and pattern fit checked so Im not sure what the deal is. isnt the 4 cyc the one that is smaller, so its not like i could have been sent the wrong one because then it would be too small right??

anybody familiar with trail gear thirds have any thoughts...this sas has already seen way too many setbacks.

If it's the plumbing that's preventing you from sliding it in I wouldn't hammer on it, can you gently bent the plumbing out of the way to slide it in? Be careful not to kink the hard-lines if you bend them.

And 4 cyl or 6 cyl housing wouldn't make a difference, they're both the same size and interchangable as far as mounting

it seems like there is no where to bend it out of the way, and even if I did I dont even know if it would do anything.
Im going to try an upload some pics.

maybe take a round file to the housing to remove some of the interference? It doesn't look like you'd have to remove much and there's still plenty of surface to seal . . .

Does it seem like its hanging up on the air line? corax is on to somthing with the filing on the housing to make clearance for the air line I would not mess with the air line itself.

When I attempt to roll in my 4cyl 529's it is very tight fit through the gap in the housing where the ring gear passes threw and takes a little rocking of the pinion flange to find the sweet spot before it will drop in.

judging from this pick here http://gearinstalls.com/scottgarb.htm
the air line look routed different.

i don't know if there is a certain way the line must be ran or not? never had the pleasure of installing an arb.

hmm yes, you are right. its seems that routing is different.

as i looked a little closer at my unit and where it was scraping, it seems like the cap that bolts the adjustable rings down sits out too much. I dont remember the names of these parts...cap and thrust washer? first time Ive fiddled around with the thirds so that why im asking about all this.

I think a little grinding on the housing might help, but it might need more than a little. the gears fit through fine.

I can see what your talking about by looking at the picture the air bearing assembly sticks way out. typically the adjuster wheels are flush, but you have a retainer clip and teh air bearing to add on to the mess.

Not sure what to do for you on that one

seems if clearance the housing could be needed you would get some sort of literature on that procedure.

Just for the record, Ive had nothing but great experience with the guys at trail gear, this is in no way a complaint thread on TG. anytime Ive had a problem with their gear its been no questions asked and a package on my door step the very next day free of charge.

Ill be calling them in the morning, I was just hoping I was doing something newbie and I could be getting it in there tonight...well maybe there is still chance for that... one way...or another...

I guess im going to wait until I call them in the morning before I start flinging sparks. I think that cap mount needs to be ground down just a hair too, so im going to wait on the warranty voiding mods until the

Call and talk to Joseph or John and they will getcha taken care of.

Had a Zuk case rebuild where everytime under load it wouldn't stay in 4WD. Take it apart, looked fine. Put it back together and in the truck, same thing. After this happened way too many times, called John and talked to the tech guy and he knew just what was happening, bearing clip wasn't staying seated and under load the output shaft bearing was moving but when load was off it popped back into place. Problem is that you couldn't see it to check it because of a seal. They are always very helpful if I have to call for anything.

I would wait and call this morning before modifying anything as those arb 3rds are a chunk of $$$.

Please post an update with the fix.

My bet is also on grinding the housing a tad.

My new TG 3rd won't fit either

I have a 97 4runner which I spent all day yesterday trying to make my new Trail Gear ARB 132 3rd member fit and it aint gonna happen. On the left side it catches on the adjuster nut and on the right side it catches on the seal housing. I looked at your pictures very closely and it looks like our 3rds are exactly the same setup. Seal housing tube is routed exactly the same. When I received my 3rd I also received the manual for ARB RD132 Toyota 8". The pictures in the manual show a few differences. The routing of the seal housing tube is different. In the manual the adjuster nut shows as being flush with the bearing cap and a space between the locking tab and adjuster nut (fig 10). On our 3rds the adjuster nut is not flush with the bearing cap and there is no gap between the locking tab and the adjuster nut. I measured the distance between adjuster nut and seal housing on the TG 3rd and compared it to the original 3rd. 7 1/4" versus 6 3/4". It looks like the adjuster nuts might be the cause of the problem. It looks like they should go in farther but I don't know if this is possible. I will be contacting Trail Gear as well but it is going to have to wait as I have to go out of town for a few weeks.

ARB changed the design of the seal housing a while back and also changed the routing of the copper line. So, if you compare to an older install, they will look different.

Also, another vote for housing grinding. I had to with mine and still managed to tweak the copper on the way in. In the end, it caught on the ring gear and got yanked loose from the air valve and I got to tear the whole thing down again. Moral of the story, take your time and make sure you get it in unmolested. Get an extra pair of hands if need be. And don't be afraid to grind the housing. They are a tight fit.

heck, my factory 4.88 swap was a tight fit... i cant imagine how you could fit it in with the air line ruunning around it... so, my vote is to grind the housing as well...
