New tail lights on a flatbed help

I built a flat bed for my 88 toyo p-up and am having problems finding replacements tail lights...one option is to buy the trailer wiring converter for the tail lights and run trailer lights...and other than that i have no idea. I have tried trailer lights w/out the conversion harness and they only have three wires...a ground, a wire for turn/stop (im guessing), and one for the tail runner lights, i cant figure out how to wire it in to the toyota tail light harness. my toyota has a brake light wire, 2 tail runner lights wires (i wired together), a ground, turn signal wire, and reverse light wire on each side

for now im not worried about reverse lights

it seems a lot more difficult than it is, im probably over thinking things

FMVSS 108 tells you all you need to know about lighting.

If the truck has separate lights for turn signals and brake lights, you have the option of combining the two via some means like a trailer adapter into one light, or run seperate lights.

whoa...fmvss 108 is HUGE...i have been able to get all the lights to work except for the tail light that turns on when the headlights are turned on...i was also thinking about running different blinkers too but i can wire in the lights where when i turn on the blinker it blinks but when the brakes are pushed and the blinker is on, only the brake light shows...which is ok i guess...im just having issues getting the tail light bulb that turns on when i turn the headlights on wired in...

wire this, wire that...no wonder i like mechanics better than electrics

I ran "offroad equipment" taillights on mine, and had to buy the wire converter, it was like $20 from napa. it internally converts the 5(?) wire system toyota uses to the 3 wire the "trailer" lights use. worked out great. the only issue i have is when i step on the brake with the turn signal on, the directional blinks faster like newer cars when a bulb is out. could be because i didn't ground the converter, just used the ground from the lights.

i got it sorted out...i left the reverse light out...so i have 4 wires now, then i wired the 2 tail light wires together, i hooked up the tail light wires to the dull filament, and the bright filament hooked to the brake wire, then the turn signal to a bulb that didnt come with the lights i bought...

when i wired the brake and turn signal lights together (hoping to run it light trailer lights are supposed to run) and turned the turn signal on, both turn signals blinked...my blinkers do the same as skoalbandits but i didnt buy the converter, i think its because im using smaller bulbs than the toyota blinker bulbs... so i didnt buy a converter =]
idk im glad i finished the flat bed now!
