new motor wont start!!!!!!

So I put together a new motor 10k miles ago. It got cold for about a week in Dec. and the truck got HOT not boiling over but almost. after nursing it back down to a normal temp I checked the fluid level in the rad. it was super low. I have had a little leak out of the drivers rad hose above the alt. for about 5 months and I add a little every now and then ( It wasn't big enough to worry about just yet and the fix meant replacing the metal pipe that goes behind the alt.) No biggie it's all good, then it got cold again and I smell coolant in the exhaust grrr. It has been hot 3 times since dec and never for more than 5 miniutes. So last sunday I pull the head check it for warpage and cracks, check the block for the same. I replace the timing, intake, head, gaskets and replaced the ENGNBLDR 261c cam with a used stock EFI cam.

Now we have this

It has spark, Fuel, and is timed.

I am stuck thinking inside the Box and need new perspective.

anyhow... how's your compression?
is the IAV/AAV leaking into the intake?

does it try to start,sputter, or just nothing. how do you know you have fuel when cranking.
did you spay some starting fluid just for fun.

pulled the intake tube sprayed some starter fluid in there, nothing,

what's the IAV/AAV?

Idle Air Valve/Auxiliary Air Valve

Can you physically see spark coming from the plugs???

Also, is your air filter and stuff attached. My truck WILL NOT start unless it has the front intake tube attached.

I pulled the wires and grounded them and cranked it over to check for spark. all wires have spark, I'll be gapping and cleaning the plugs today.

How do I check the IAV/AAV and where is it?

after screwing with it for a bit.

It runs


Barely

it is not firing on all cylinders for sure and I have to hold the gas pedal down to get it to even start (EFI)

sounds like fun.

changed out that cam huh. I assume it was readjusted for the (if) different sized lobes???

oh, I just thought of something that is probably not it, but is worth looking into if she overheated a few times. I could time my motor (3.0) for the life of me after putting a rebuild in. the sensors went bad from the overheat and were telling the computer crazy things. I dont want to send you on a chase, miner started fine but would advance all crazy after she warmed up...which does not sound like your issue, but thought id mention it since you said you overheated a few times.

I had a feeling that the timing chain might be off one tooth so I pulled the valve cover to correct it and found this.



coolant in the oil. The reason I pulled the head in the first place. So I have to take it completely apart and find the bad gasket or CRACK.

I forgot to adjust the valves when I swapped out the cam and my TPS is toast.

Runs great now!!

Coolant in oil issue

Just an FYI. On 22R/22RE models, if the timing chain was loose for a long time (guides worn/chain stretched, etc), the chain will rub the aluminum timing cover. If this continues, the chain will eventually rub a hole in the timing cover (which usually occurs on the inside of the timing cover near the lower radiator hose housing).

To check, take the timing cover off, and shine a flashlight in the radiator hose housing, if you see light on the inside of the timing cover, you need a new cover. There will most likely be some deep gooves worn in the timing cover where the chain has eaten into the timing cover.

I'm a Toyota mechanic, and see this all the time. People always think the head gasket is blown, and it's usually a hole in the timing cover.

it could be residual left over.

When I rebuilt the motor I put in the metal guides so that solves the pesky timingcover prob.

The water was residual from when I took it apart to do the head gasket the first time.

I have a feeling that the Original water in the exhaust was from a leaking timing cover gasket. When I pulled it off the gasket did not stick to either the cover or the motor around one of the bolt holes (it showed signs of leaking antifreeze into an oil passage) I would susspect that it wasn't verymuch but in cold weather enough to give it that unmistaken burning antifreeze smell in the exhaust.

I had a toyota mech from Burt toyota in denver come over and he helped me out. He said, in more words than this, that I was being paranoid a little bit and that the film on the head bolts was condensation and left overs from the tear down. Change the oil in a few miles and it should be good.
