New to me 91 4X4 Ex Cab 22RE 5 spd

I'm still pretty new to these ol' Toyota's, but I seem to be somewhat addicted to them! Last year i bought my first....it was an 89 reg cab 2wd. If you remember any of my old posts, it was pretty nice, with the exception of the swiss cheese looking rotted frame.....I drove it for a couple months until I broke it

I even bought a spare chassis and planned a frame swap...but I just didn't want to take the time and space to do it, so I sold everything....actually got all my money back plus I have a few parts left!

Anyway....I've been searching for another ever since and it had to be cheap, but hopefully with some potential...

Just picked this one up last week...its a 91 Deluxe 4X4 Ex Cab 22RE, 5 Speed with 216,000 miles on it. Got it for $1750 (not bad?)

Its needs a little work, but it runs good, is pretty dang straight, and the frame looks pretty good, just some surface rust on it. Above all the wheel wells it was rusted, and the PO did a backyard craptastic bondo job and then covered it with some bed liner type spray....its looks decent from a distance, but I think I can fix....eventually I may swap the front fenders and weld in new bed sides...or maybe just drive it! its pretty faded, but I checked a spot with some wax and it shined up pretty good....Hell, maybe I'll just shine it up, and go with some cut out flares on it. I hate toppers, so its for sale. Also got a diamond plate tool box with it that is for sale.

here are the other issues:
most dash lights don't work...could be fuses or bulbs I suppose.
Engine makes a little noise (maybe Timing chain tensioners?) I plan to swap timing chain asap
Shifts terribly hard....won't go into gear at idle without trouble....hard to start unless using the clutch override switch. has new master and slave cylinders and bled out...i'm thinking it needs a clutch or maybe just bled professionally, or maybe even the pedal bracket is cracked...haven't looked yet. if its the original clutch, i'd say its due for a swap!

Once moving, it stills shifts hard, but drives good and maintained interstate speed ok....its seems a little down on power compared to my old 2wd, but I think it might do better with some smaller 225/75R15s. The 31/10.50R15s on Tacoma wheels look pretty good on there though.

So what do you think? pretty good project truck?

project truck? no way! that thing is cherry. 1750 is a killer deal. I love the 89-95 ext cab pick ups with a 22re and 5 speed I wouldn't mind one to DD myself.

yea, i'm hoping the clutch is not too much trouble, but donor parts aren't too hard to find...its gonna be my DD to save fuel and miles on my 07 GMC...and I'm hoping my girlfriends 14 year old takes some interest in it and it may be his to drive eventually. That is, if I can give it up. LOL

i'd love to find a snowplow for it...that would save me from getting out in the cold to shovel/snowblow/run ATV, etc...

i was surprised when I showed up to look at it....most everything here is IA in this price range is totally rotted out. (damn salt!!!!) but this one is pretty clean, it should detail out pretty nice. I've seen some recently in this condition going for $3000 or more....hell, one just sold on Ebay near here that had 156,000 miles and a fresh paint job...it went for $4300...sheesh!!!!!

haha yeah my truck was 4200 bucks, but Im in cali ( no rust ) and it only had 107k miles... I've already had to replace my clutch at 110k miles but thats because I was being retarded... also had to replace the flywheel along with that.

clutch aint a hard job LOL

and you might wanna do a tune up, get ya a nice exhaust system with a header and 2.25" pipe, ISR mod, battery intake swap mod, and maybe some junkyard 4.56 gears and you will love the power with the 31's

lol it'll look goofy with 225's on it LOL!!

I'm pretty sure this one is choked right now....the PO had the exhaust replaced and he said the shop "had" to put in a cat, plus the pipe looks tiny (i didn't measure yet)....I'm thinking cold air intake or at least K&N filter, maybe header, but at least remove the cat get a free flowing exhaust and go 2.25" or 2.5" all the way back.

wish it had 4.56's in it! yea, the 225's might look kinda goofy, but I also like the mileage since my GMC eats fuel like crazy. 225's were stock on this truck and I'm pretty sure the speedo is off; Ineed to get the GPS in it and see.

The 225's will make it look like it has a lift!

all those cold air intakes are junk (or so i've heard) search around on here for the ISR mod, it's A LOT better supposedly, and K&N filters are junky, they let in too much dust and dirt, spectre filters are good? i see a lot of guys using them on here

Cherry is right!!! That Interior is awesome!!! You have found yourself a great deal there, if you're careful, and maintain it, that truck could last u another 50-100k easy.

thanks, that is what I am hoping....I bought it cheap enough that I don't mind putting a little time and money in it to freshen it up for another 50-100K. Some more interior pics:
