i have a 1st 4runner with an a/t. my cluster has the ECT/normal indicator in the top right corner. Im looking to replace my current cluster, but some most of the ones im seeing are with the volt meter in that location,


i guess which are from manual trucks. Will i still beable to use one of those? or will i need one with the ECT

should be fine i think as i have the same cluster in mine but again mines 5-speed all you can do is put it in and see if anything the cluster fuse will blow and then you know it wont

but i say yes it will be fine there wired so that they can have both same harness as a 5-speed and an auto hope it helps you out buddy

and some clusters have functions, particularly the idiot lights, built into them anyways. so maybe the new cluster doesn't have the bulb, but might have the provisions for it. shine a light into the new cluster and see if you can make out the hidden features.

aight thanks guys... i figured it would be ok, i just wanted to get another opinion before i spent the time and money.

if you look close at the pic you posted, you'll notice that there's about 1" space between the edges of the gauges and the sides of the cluster... just about enough room to put an idiot light, or 5, down each side.

There is a speed sensor in the auto cluster that the 5 speed doesn't have.

okay, something new to me.
so you're saying the 1st gen automatic equipped speedometer is electrical and not mechanical? that's odd. my wife's 91 is mechanical and an auto, but basic cluster. hmmm.... wonder if that would be something related to the options for the turbo digital cluster...?

you know, now that i think about it i seriously think that are cable ran and somewhere in 92 they were switched to electric. I'm really not sure on this. i have pulled a few AT clusters and there was a cable on the back.

so maybe it's still cable driven to minimize any variations between chassis and optional equipment, but only has the speed sensor on the cluster itself to convert to an electric speedo?

anyone want to donate a few trucks to test?

The instrument cluster contains speed sensor no. 1. The tranny has speed sensor no. 2 on the driver side. The ECT unit for the tranny uses signals from both sensors.

but that's just wierd... I just scoped over a diagram for an 87 turbo, and there are no speed sensors in the diagram. hmm....

goodie, so i have to find another a/t cluster. honestly i dont NEED a whole new cluster, i just wanted to get another one cause some of my gauges dont work in the cluster i have now. i just didnt know how much trouble it is to switch out the gauges to my current cluster.

Yes, get one for an auto, make sure you get one for a 22re. And you have to change the oil pressure sending unit. I swapped mine on my 86.

just scoped out ECU codes for 85-88 engines and none of those codes are mentioned until the 88 3VZE. prior to that, the only code referencing any speed sensor is a code 10....

But I have to take back my previous comment about not finding them on schematics... I found them.

Now I'm really getting confused. But I guess we'd have to know if the automatic gauge cluster came from an a-43d (non ecu controlled) or a340e/h.
we are still talking about 85-88 cluster, no?

oh ok. is everything basically plug and play with the cluster? ive havent swapped one out yet.

abecedarian, engine codes and tranny codes are not the same thing. The check engine light blinks codes from the ECU, the OD light blinks codes from the ECT unit.
