New guy, has stalling problems 88 22re

Hey guys, new to your forum and the toyota truck world. i have heard nothing but good things about these trucks so i bought one. $400 bucks 88 4x4 a/t dlx 22re

So i get it with antifreeze in the oil and a new head gasket. do a little research, bought a timing cover, problem solved.

I let the truck warm up and it stalls. i checked the tps, it was bad, put a new one on, runs fine until its warm, sputters and stalls. i have checked and rechecked the tps setting a dozen times and it will not stay running once its warm and smells rich. i kept it running by holding open the throttle from the bay and i kept feeling the flapper in the airbox opening and closing suddenly. oh and it has no power trying to accelerate warm or cold.

i am stumped....

Idle air valve under the throttle body is probably stuck closed and causing a low cold idle. The valve is supposed to be open when cold, causing a high cold idle like cold carb / chokes do, and slowly close as the engine warms up causing the idle to come down to normal.
Idle speed should be about 750 with the engine warmed up. So I'd start by bringing the idle up to speed when warm and see how it runs.

it idles fine for a bit but stalls once warm, restarts immediately, runs a bit 2 mins or so, stumbles and stalls, start once its cool, idles until warm same thing over and over.

It is directly below the throttle body and has some hoses conneted to it.
Should look similar to:

Abe, does rebuilding the idle air valve require any new gaskets or does it use an o-ring seal? I think mine is stuck so I would like to have any necessary parts before I tear into it. Eric

so i put on an iac, runs better, still idles low hot or cold, wont stay running in drive while stopped. it has slow acceleration but you can tell its starved for something like i floor it and it wants to go it is just really slow. i stalled at a light and upon restart it would barely crawl to get out of the way of the poor people waiting on me to get out of the way.

Any codes? Mass Air flow? Distributor and pick-up coil? Coolant Temp sensor? Vacuum leak? When its running like garbage try beating one the mass air flow sensor and see if it changes if it does then thats mostly your prob. Clogged fuel filter? Fuel pump going out? Fuel pressure and regulator?
