I'm seriously considering buying this toyota, 1992 V6, 3.0..

So one of the previous owners blew the head gasket, and the guy I am buying it from bought it and repaired (he is a mechanic). He did many things, resurfaced the fly wheel, repacked the bearings, new and updated head gasket, new timing belt, many new hoses, etc... and it looks and runs really nice... but he did not replace or rebuild the motor. I live in California, and it passed smog (he says).

It reads 345,000 miles on the odometer. Only 2 owners. No deep rust and minimal surface rust. Lived in California it's whole life..

Is there any possible way that it could be the original engine?? I am worried if I buy, that in 6 months I will need a new motor, or more. While I don't mind re-doing the motor, I would like to get 150,000 to 200,000 miles out of it first, being a new purchase. Is it possible that the head gasket blew from a cracked engine block?? What other reasons would blow a head gasket? I am taking it to a mechanic to inspect before I buy, but I want to know what other things to look for.

Test drive and visually inspect the truck if you can. A cracked engine will result in some lost power, as well as a wonderful oil leak. It's possible that a burnt valve could cause the blown gasket, but you should be able to tell through a test drive, as well. Also, if this mechanic is worth his salt (and isn't a looney), he wouldn't've gone through the trouble of a head gasket change without addressing the theoretical issue of a burnt valve.

The deal sounds pretty good from what you've said, but you're leaving a crucial part out.. HOW MUCH?

Way too bloody much, and I know it. I test-drove it, and it does not appear to leak. Got it up to speed, and its definitely got more umf than the 22re, as I recently test drove my friend's '95 a while ago to get a feel for it.

You have a ton of leverage to deal at that high mileage. You must prepare for the worst. There are definitely better deals out there but if you really like it, a reputable certified Toyota tech will help. Not just any mechanic because every year, make, and model has it's specific quirks about them.
