negative affects of exhaust leaks

on the 22re, what are some affects of having an exhaust leak? When I did the head a while back, we found about 2 stripped holes in the head. We never got around to fixing them. Will 2 or even 3 stripped studs cause a major exhaust leak, and what are the affects of such a leak?

The only real concerns are noise, and possibly allowing exhaust into the cab. Small leaks are mechanically not a big issue.

Other than driving you crazy and haunting your dreams, not much to worry about a small leak.

I noticed a small power increase after fixing the leak I had post o2 sensor. It fixed my lean issues too. I would presume that one pre o2 would be much worse.

O2 sensor measures the concentration of O2, not the "quantity", so a leak above the O2 sensor isn't going to mess with the reading.

I can think of no way for a small leak to reduce performance. Seat of the pants is really unreliable as a means of guessing power gains. If my engine were sounding better, I might subconsciously assume it had more power as well.

Thanks for the info. I still plan on fixing the stripped head holes, but I never sprang the $50 for a heli coil kit. I'll be doing that soon though. As soon as the weather gets nice.

isnt there something about an exhaust leak frying a valve or something? or is that a MAJOR one?

Valves warp if they are cooled too fast, but that's like tossing a red hot valve into a bucket of ice water, not air flowing through the tiniest of leaks and cooling off the valve stem.
