Needs a new head? ( see pic )
First post here, this is a great site with tons of valuable info! hats off to all that post here.
I have an 88 runner, water in oil, I yanked the head and found the gasket seperated exactly where I circled on the picture. Also the head looks to be pretty damaged, pitted, corroded right where the gasket sits.
my question is- Is this repairable? the #3 and #2 cylinders are showing the same thing, just not yet as bad.
Or should I search for a new or prefferably used head, as money is tight.

From the picture it's hard to tell. I would clean it up real good and post another pic to know for sure.
A good machinest could true it up for you if the head turned out to be ok.
I wouldn't cast it off as a gonner quite yet.

I am in Sacramento.
I will clean it up and take a better picture. My concern was that the corrosion is pretty deep. And if the cost of repairs outweighs the cost of a used head, than whats the point.

x2, unless you can find a machine shop that can fill that in, which is probably possible.
$348.00 from engnbldr, complete head drop it on and go. http://www.engnbldr.com/head_shop.htm

Im sure somebody could fix that head but for how much ?
ideally yes get a new head .. if a shops doing the work for you yes get a new head.
if your doing the work and your really in a bind ..a used head will work for you its been done and will continue to be done some with problems some without .
this engine is really easy to work with so its not that big of a deal i would think if doing the work your self .
i have a good used head ,I wrote 120,000 miles on it when i put it away. .
i did take the valves and such off .. have some brand new valves and springs for it ..if your ok lapping on some valves then come get it its yours .. free man .. im just trying to clear some stuff i have around here. the heads free give me $40 for the valves and springs .. you dont need the valves the heads still free.
or even take the head to a shop have them do it .. .. what ever you do with it i dont care .. im just saying its here if you want it .
