Hey guys first time poster here though ive been browsing the forums for some time. I bought a 92 4runner a couple months ago from an original owner with 85,000 miles on it. Silver, 4x4, power everything, 5speed, v6, completely stock. I originally bought this vehicle to start up wheeling and go with my friends who all have early 80 yota trucks. Ive decided i don't want to rock crawl with this vehicle though and im trying to figure out what to do.

Im a snowboarder in the winter and a mountain biker in the summer and am trying to decide weather i should get a toyota truck or keep the 4runner and mabye lift or get some all terrains on it, or if i should get a awd car like a subaru impreza. My 4runner gets decent gas mileage but im wondering if the toyota trucks would be better.

Should i set my 4runner up for a daily driver / good weekend snow, mountain bike truck, get a 80 or early 90 toyota truck, or get a awd car? Gas mileage is important along with how fun the vehicle would be to drive and if its practical. Hopefully someone can help me make up my mind. Thanks guys, great forums.

I would say keep the 4runner and do some easy mods to help with the gas mileage and overall performance. Cootees ISR Mod, new exhaust, aand some headers are the first that come to mind for perforance mods. I would saay for a lift ... keep it stock with a set of 31x10.50, 32x11.50, or 33x10.50 tires on stock rims will take you to your mountain trails. A good set of ATs such as BFG, Dunlop, or Bridgestone are going to be your best choices.

I'm sure some others will have some ideas too, but overall I say ...

Gas mileage depends on a few different things. Make sure all regular maintainence is kept up with from month to month (mile to mile). I have the cootees isr mod (intake tube) along with a k&n drop in filter and a custom cat-back magnaflow exhaust. I'm planning on adding some lcengineering headers as soon as money is available. I would look into an eletric fan. Try searchig "taurus fan" on tthe boards for an easy/cheaper way than flex-a-lite. Other than maybe some gears, but thats more of a major item, that's about all you could do to improve mileage. Well there is one thing ... don't hit the skinny pedal to hard when driving at any time. lol.

I would say the regular maintainence of a vehicle will help the most with gas mileage and life of any engine.

a broad figure would be 16 to 19 as an average. I have gotten 21.5 on mine before if I'm really conservative. Still get 19 easy though.

I was in the same boat. I ski in the winter and mountain bike in the summer(...and winter). I found that while my 92 4Runner was great in the winter for skiing/boarding, it wasn't so great for biking.

Being able to fold down half of the rear seat was great: 3 people and full length gear, and no one is uncomfortable.

Biking was a different story: while the 4Runner wasn't bad for XC, it didn't work so well for my Downhill bike. If you have a SC fork, it's nice and has D-rings in the back. I could get 3 bikes in the back all standing up(no front wheels), and strap them down with the D-rings.

Currently I've got a 03 Big Hit with a Foes F1, and with the front wheel off it just fits in the back, with the Boxxer I sued to have, I actually had to compress the fork to get it in. But I can still fit 2 bikes in the back. Which works for transport(2 bikes + 2 people), but it's not so great if you want to shuttle. And the rear window isn't quite bit enough to hang bikes off the tailgate.

I ended up selling my 4Runner and buying an 86 Pickup. I'm happy with the swap, but I do miss my 4Runner for certain things(mostly in the winter).

My '95 V6 (3.0) gets 11 m.p.g. at the moment & it's not throwing any codes; I would feel blessed to get anything over 15 m.p.g.
