So I have a 1989 pickup that I was thinking about getting rid of. It burns oil pretty bad and I doubt it will pass emissions, which my county is doing this November. The CEL is on for a code 71 that I can only track down as a bad sensor.

I've been thinking of selling it for $2000 and take that money, plus some more, and buy an $8000 car or truck. But I like the truck and I'd like to keep it if I can.

I just replaced the clutch in it with a heavy duty clutch from marlin crawler. I just filled the thing with MT-90. So I try and get it the best of parts whenever possible. The compression is about 155 on all cylinders. (give or take a few PSI).

Given that I've already put time and money and pain into the clutch, I'd like to keep the engine I have. I was contemplating an engine swap, but would not swap anything but the engine. I would like to keep the w56 and the transfer case. So I was thinking of rebuilding the 22re with a performance head. The problem with rebuilding is that I don't want to throw $4000 into a nice performance 22re and then have emissions standards raised to the point where it won't pass emissions a year from now.

So what would you guys suggest? Given that I want to keep the w56, what engine swaps can I do? Should I stick with the 22re and rebuild it or ditch the truck entirely and sell it as an off-road machine?

Also, if anyone in northern Colorado is familiar with rebuilding the 22re, I'd consider handing it over for a few weeks so someone else can rebuild it. I'd pay for the time and parts, of course.

If I go with a rebuild or engine swap, I'd like the project to not go past $3000. For that price, I can just get another vehicle and I'd maybe keep the truck in storage until I have the heart to part with it.

Take a look into Western Engine Supply in Denver. My engine spun a rod bearing about 2 months ago and i was doing some research about different places along the Front Range for a rebuild. They quoted me $2530 to rebuild the entire engine, which included removal and installation. They also give a 5 year 50,000 mile warranty.

I decided to go with a stage 2 engine from 22RE performance because I want some extra goodies on mine. If you put that much work into a truck, just keep it...

not sure on what the thoughts of the Jasper engines are on here, but if your just looking for a stock replacement, I got quoted like $2500ish for a remanned long block that was with the install.

That's not too bad. I was looking at getting the engnbldr performance head. Do you know if they'd allow me to bring in my own head and have them install it?

As it is, I may just go with the engnldr head and see how that works out. Who knows, maybe the burning oil is caused by bad valves.

Does Western Engine supply specialize in toyotas? From their website, it doesn't look like it. I'm still considering western engine, but if I can find a place that does Toyotas, I'd have more trust in them.

22RE engine rebuild and install shouldn't be more than $2k period. I had maybe $600 in parts/machine work in mine and that was a whole new rebuilt head.

Rebuild.

One other option I'm considering is taking it to my friend's cousin's repair shop and have him do all the work. I want to purchase all the parts starting with the next paycheck I get, and just stock up on parts. That way I can drive the truck to the shop with the parts in the back and have him start.
Even with the labor you still say it shouldn't be over $2000?
