Need some advice on a carb selection

I know this is gonna be a big debate, and has somewhat been covered before but here goes:

Full rebuild w/ Downey 4-1 header, 2.25" header-back exhaust w/Thrush turbo muffler, 268 ENGBLDR cam, ENGBLDR stock style brand new head.

THIS for $280.00 shipped (+$75 refundable core deposit) from 22re performance: Rebuilt Aisin Electric Choke

OR

THIS for $284.48 shipped from JT Outfitters: 34/34 Weber Kit Electric Choke

OR

THIS for $259.95 shipped from webercarboutlet: 34 DGEC Weber Kit Electric Choke

i've heard alot of people not like the weber because they're a pita to tune.
I've never had any problems with my aisin, so i see no point in fixing something that's never failed me.

Good thread! I hope to see more people chime in on this one. I had my Aisin rebuilt and I'm not sure it was the best choice? Most seem to prefer the Aisin, but not sure if it's just because they haven't had any problems or they've tried the Weber's and not liked them?

Hope you get some reponses...

also: some people say the aisin is better for offroad, because on steep climbs it doesn't stall out, but on descent it gets flooded.
i've never experienced this, so i cant be sure.

I've rebuilt my aisin as well, however, the choke is still messed up, having trouble finding a replacement for it, the secondaries don't seem to want to engage (have not confirmed that though), Runs rich somewhere, not sure at idle, normal driving, warm-up only, or pegged full throttle.... so time for a new carb. there is also the 32/36 or the 38/38. But I think this 34/34 will be a better fit and almost the same price, although seems to be not as common as the 32/36 or 38/38. I think I found the same weber kit for a little cheaper on ebay added the link to the OP. with free shipping. Looking forward to the replies as well.

I would go with the weber but only because I am familiar with them. The perform vary good and are a great simple designe. If you really want to find out the cinks with the webers. Look up old air cooled VW hot roders. there is lots of info. and then you will understand why a weber

I think the 34/34 is probably your best bet since you have a more than stock cam & head. However, I read that the 34/34 isn't a "true" Weber? Supposedly a Chinese copy? I really don't know but I've been researching these carbs lately myself and seem to remember this.

Check out http://www.webernorthamerica.com/weber-carburetors.htm The 34/34 isn't listed.

.. or I could be completely nuts as the cold medicine I'm on has me hallucinating!!!! )

Oh, and I've heard the Redline conversion kits are the best.

I like the intake that LCE has that fits a Weber but it is expensive!!

I am thinking all the 34/34 is is the 32/36 carb with 34/34 jets with the vac secondaries. However it could be like the 38/38 and have 34/34 jets with sync. secondaries. I am thinking the vac though.

I have a 32/36, Thorley header, 1 chamber flowmaster, and a lightened flywheel. Runs like a champ.

LMAO, yeah I thought about that too when I rebuilt the motor, however, wasn't in the price range at the time. Too late now, motor is done and has about 300 miles on it. Running good, except a slight valve tap and the rich condition.

Does it seem that the one who have the most problems are still using the emissions equipment still? ie PAIR, EGR.

Ricey? Come on now, I wouldnt be caught in the desert with a ricey sounding truck. My truck is loud, way too loud for a DD, but its a deep tone.

Also saw a mention of emissions, I have zero emissions on my truck, block off plates a plenty!

To top it off, I just threw a different weber 32/36 on it and I am in the process of tuning it. The old one had a few flat spots and needs a rebuild. I'll post up a sound clip when I get her all tuned.

Why?
For a 1-2MPG upgrade and 10 more HP?
Better off just dropping in a 4.3L Vortec, or a 3.4 toyota engine..

Meh, i don't like computer junk in my cars or trucks.
It always makes everything difficult.
A carbed 4.3 would be pretty cool, mainly because i don't have an ECU or any of that stuff in my pickup.

A destroked 350 would be pretty cool too.
350's are a dime a dozen, lol.

Did you end up buying a carb? If not, and are still looking for a decent price, check out Chirco. You can get 10% off of your first order and they sell Redline kits.

This weekend I saw a 89 22R Pickup that had the 32/36 conversion on it. He said it was a Redline kit and he pretty much just removed the old carb and installed this one without any adjustments. It did clean up the engine compartment with regards to the vacuum lines, egr, etc. He doesn't have to worry about smog testing where it is registered.

I'm thinking for a 4x4 - you'll need to make some adjustments based on the amount of 4wheeling you do. For a 2WD street truck - out of the box may be OK.
