Hi everyone,
I purchased a 92 4Runner (entirely stock) about 5 months ago and quickly realized it can be somewhat gutless. I have the V6-3.0 engine and the auto transmisison in it and haven't done anything to it yet. I also stumbled across a 91 4runner with the entire engine and driveline intact for $300. The previous owner said he hit a deer and it seized. It has the 5-speed manual, and the same engine. I am on a somewhat tight-budget right now and wanted to know if it would be feasible to do a transmission swap, taking out the auto and putting in the manual. Any opinions or suggestions?

It's been done before - do a search. Just be prepared for any differences (minor) between the engines, etc. as 91-92 is from what I understand somewhere around the time when they made some very minor changes in the odd component (I think the tensioner and something else).

The 5 speed R150 is an awesome transmission.

I think you will need to swap over the pedal assembly, clutch master/slave, plumbing, cut a little bigger hole in the floorboard for shifters, t-case linkage, flywheel, maybe starter, and Im not sure on the 3.0 (can't imagine it's different) you will need to jump the park/nuetral wires so the computer thinks it is in park, or else it won't start. Im sure there is more I'm forgetting but it'll come to me. There will be some careful drilling involved to get the pedals/master cylinder in just the right spot so get a good 90* angle drill and take your time. Also you will have to use the newer tcase if I remember right.

Thanks a lot, it sounds like a fun little project and the more I read into it, the better it sounds. I have heard a lot of good things about the manual, so I think I'm going to go for it. Don't quite know when, though. Also, I was thinking about the whole "tricking" your computer thing, and wondered if I could just switch the computers from the 91 to the 92.. anyways. Thanks for the input!
