Question Need to re-gear with 31's ??

I might have scored a set of 31" tires, but I'm wondering if I'll need to re-gear to run them with a 22RE and an auto tranny. Be interested in hearing from those who have done this.

You shouldn't need to re-gear with 31's, I would only re-gear if you are planning on going bigger in the future.

I researched and I found a dozen posts with a dozen opinions. The truck needs to be my daily driver in an area that's a bit hilly. I noticed that Toyota had a 31" option which came with either 4.56 or 4.88 gears depending on tranny. Apparently Toyota wasn't happy with running the typical 4.30 gears with 31 tires which is why I'm asking.

I run 31x10.50s on my stock axles with no problems. I live in a hilly area too and it doesn't cause me any problems. The only issue is that they are bigger than stock size so my speedometer is a little off.

I have 31's on 4.10 axles. I don't have any troubles on the road or off road. I drive back and forth from Morgantown to the D.C. area about once a month and it doesn't cause any problems even on the huge hills on I 68. Around town it's not bad at all. You'll notice a difference for sure, but it's not going to kill your mileage or driveability.

Your absolutely correct. Not sure what gearing you have now, but if the stock size for your truck is smaller then 31's, which it probably is then ya id gear it down. Especially being an auto trans. It probably has 4.30 now. Id go 4.56 if its not already. edit: 4.88's if you plan on doing any kind of towing, even light.

Youll find alot of people saying its alright. Even people saying "I run 35's with 4.10's and its alright". Well if your happy with just alright. But like it or not you have less power now. And you can get it back.

I had 235 75 15's on my Pickup and my 4Runner has the 31's. So I can't give a direct comparison since they are two different vehicles with different weight's and wear on the motors. I get about 19 on the highway at 65 MPH and 17 around town with the 31's. Mileage in my totally bone stock Pickup was about 21 highway and 18 around town. Keep in mind, the Pickup had half as many miles, and a lot less weight. Your indicated fuel mileage will go down, but if you correct for tire size then it goes back up. To correct for the change in diameter between 235 75 15 tires and 31's, multiply your indicated mileage by 1.069.

Obviously you'll lose acceleration. Whether you lose MPG, that's debateable and probably depends on what speeds you're driving and what type of hills you have. As far as capability to move up hills, I'd say you won't have any complaints.

Try it out. If you don't like it, you said you're getting a good deal, so just turn around and sell them to someone else, possibly at a profit.

Ya. Well theres nothing wrong with putting bigger tires on your toyota, then re-gearing it to match.

As far as climbing hills with a 22re, auto trans, 31's tires, and 4.30 gears, ive heard alot of complaints. Like my truck is a slug, it doesnt accelerate, 0-60 in 5 minutes. Stuff like that.

I dont think the OP is asking what he can get away with. He's asking whats right. Otherwise ya you can put any tires you want on there and it will still GO.

No they all had 4.11's that I know of.

4.30 is an auto gear ratio.

Most 1st gen 4Runners with an auto-trans had 4.30 gears, either v6 or 22re.
After that, there is no definitive standard for which model with specific options got certain gears. You can find 2nd gen v6 autos with 3.90 (2wd) 4.10, 4.30, 4.56 or 4.88 ('93-'95 with the 31" tire option had the available 4.88 gears)
You can also find v6 MANUAL trans with 4.10, 4.30 or 4.56 gears.
22res with 3.90 (2wd) 4.10, 4.30, and I THINK very rarely 4.56.

Mine is an auto with 4.30s. I'd like not to have to regear for now. I can do it myself without any trouble, but getting tires -and- gears blows the budget.

Then dont worry about it. Maybe you started a post just to hear what you wanted hear. To fully answer your question: yes you can run your 22re auto with 31's without gears. But youll lose power. And most likely mpg, weather its arguable in some people's minds or not. Your losing power because its harder to push the vehicle, probably going to use more fuel in that situation aswell.

Its not a spaceship its way more complicated its toyota.
