need help diagnosing check engine light

ok let me start off with the basics. i have an 89 4runner 2.2 RE automatic. sunday i replaced the starter because it quit working on me. after i installed the starter i started the vehicle to make sure i installed it properly and right away the check engine light came on. i disconnected the battery and let it sit a little bit then re connected it and it was still on. today i figured maybe i forgot to put the gas cap back on when i filled it saturday night but it was in place. i took the cap off which released some pressure then put it back on thinking that i may have had it too loose. the light stayed off for 2-3 blocks but when i got on the gas it came on again. i also blew through a half tank of gas to and from work where it normally takes 3 days to go through that much. i didnt see any disconected wires near where i was working on the starter so im kind of lost as to where to start looking

any help would be appreciated

thanks

jason

Did you pull the codes?

Look over your passenger side fender, inside the engine bay there will be a little grey box with "diagnostic" on the top. Open that. Now take a peice of wire or unfolded paper clip and jump the E1 and TE1 connectors.

Now go into the truck, turn the key to the run position and count the blinks of the check engine light. Have a pen and paper ready.

Just a shot, but on my previous 93 pickup, the knock sensor got disconnected when I put a new starter on it. I'm not familiar enough with the wiring and all on the 4runner's yet to know if everything hooks up the same, but just thought I'd mention that.

i was wondering if that was the case, but a friend of a friend swore up and down that his 4runner had a 2.2L engine in it so i thought i would put that out there

i was looking around that area last night as best i could with the rain and the dark i did find one plug that seemed to be loose but didnt find anything that it would plug into. i may try to get a pic of it and post it to see if anyone can tell me if it may have gotten pulled in the process

ok i got it figured out, pulled it in the garage after work and jacked it up. i did in fact pull out a plug and not realise it. after serarching for about 30 minutes i found the spot it pulled out of about an inch to the left oftheoil filter ( if oyu are looking at it ) there was a sensor that i pulled the plug out of, it was so difficult to find it because the previous owner painted the whole engine and the dillhole didnt bother removing the sensors he just painted them so the sensor was the same color as the engine block and just blended right in

thanks for the help folks
